Pro Stock Bike Qualifying Notes, Final Session
Sat, 2 Aug 2003, 06:45 PM
Notes from final, round 4 qualifying in Pro Stock Bike at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series,
16th annual FRAM-Autolite NHRA Nationals listing lane, rider name, elapsed time/top speed this
round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order
prior to run:
Left Lane: Ryan Schnitz Runs 7.713/167.84, Now #22; Best prior run: 7.442/182.70,
Was #22
Right Lane: Matt Guidera Runs 7.740/170.64, Now #24; Best prior run: 8.078/161.90,
Was #24
3:11 PM I don't think we'll see many 7.0s this session. Current weather conditions:
79 degrees,46 percent relative humidity, the barometer 30.01 inches. No help for the first pair.
We also have a tail wind today of about 9 mph.
Left Lane: Jay Matthews Runs 7.265/183.84, Now #18; Best prior run: 7.356/180.02,
Was #20
Right Lane: Michael Lozano Runs 7.597/172.43, Now #23; Best prior run: 7.588/172.45,
Was #23
Matthews picks up, but not enough. Same for Lozano.
Left Lane: Redell Harris Runs 7.320/179.76, Now #20; Best prior run: 7.281/182.77,
Was #20
Right Lane: Lloyd Straus Runs 7.500/181.94, Now #21; Best prior run: 7.405/174.62,
Was #21
Again both riders fail to improve.
Left Lane: Sean Conner Runs 7.167/186.54, Now #11; Best prior run: 7.279/181.91,
Was #19
Right Lane: Jerry Jankanish Runs 18.304/38.85, Now #18; Best prior run:
7.249/180.62, Was #17
We have our first bump into the show. Conner makes the field and bumps Hale.
Jankanish sat up early in the run and will not qualify. Nice pass for Conner. That will put
Chris Reuter on the new bump.
Left Lane: Chris Reuter No Time, Now #17; Best prior run: 7.226/187.31, Was #16
Right Lane: Blaine Hale Runs 7.189/186.82, Now #15; Best prior run: 7.244/186.30,
Was #17
Here we have Hale, who's just been bumped, and Reuter who just got moved to the
bump. Hale actually moves back into the show and bumps Reuter. Reuter can't fight back due to
the fact he left before the tree came down.
Left Lane: Michael Phillips Runs 7.145/188.65, Now #10; Best prior run:
7.177/187.55, Was #14
Right Lane: Fred Camarena Runs 7.246/185.79, Now #16; Best prior run: 7.189/185.36,
Was #16
Phillips finds something and moves up four spots. Camarena remains on the
bubble.
Left Lane: GT Tonglet Runs 7.203/185.64, Now #14; Best prior run: 7.171/186.23, Was
#14
Right Lane: Antron Brown Runs 7.346/187.21, Now #13; Best prior run: 7.168/187.50,
Was #13
GT slows slightly on the Harley and remains #14. Brown's performance falls way off
and he remains #13.
Left Lane: Mike Berry Runs 7.104/187.00, Now #5; Best prior run: 7.161/184.77, Was
#11
Right Lane: Andrew Hines Runs 7.105/195.28, Now #6; Best prior run: 7.133/184.57,
Was #9
All the action in this pair was after the finish line. Berry's ride appeared to lose
an engine and get oil all over rear tire. He came over into Hines lane and they got very close
as Berry had both feet out trying to steer the bike with both feet spread like outriggers. Very
close. Hines speed is faster than the current record. Could see that change this
weekend.
Left Lane: Karen Stoffer Runs 7.925/127.45, Now #8; Best prior run: 7.113/190.38,
Was #8
Right Lane: Fred Collis Runs 7.266/191.59, Now #10; Best prior run: 7.131/186.79,
Was #10
Less excitement here but no help either.
Left Lane: Geno Scali Runs 7.124/184.62, Now #4; Best prior run: 7.094/189.55, Was
#4
Right Lane: Steve Johnson Runs 7.317/181.08, Now #9; Best prior run: 7.131/187.42,
Was #9
Nice lap for Scali but no help in qualifying. Johnson slows as well.
Left Lane: Reggie Showers Runs 7.110/194.27, Now #3; Best prior run: 7.074/190.19,
Was #3
Right Lane: Angelle Savoie Runs 7.091/189.73, Now #4; Best prior run: 7.110/188.23,
Was #7
Savoie moves up and runs a 7.0. Showers runs faster than the national record as well
as Hines. Both have a leg up on the record if they can back it in eliminations.
Left Lane: Shawn Gann Runs 7.082/189.87, Now #2; Best prior run: 7.070/190.24, Was
#2
Right Lane: Craig Treble Runs 10.142/83.38, Now #1; Best prior run: 7.062/189.79,
Was #1
Treble sits up at half track and goes into eliminations with a few questions. He's
been up and down in his four qualifying attempts. Gann throws another 7.0 at the field and he's
ready for Sunday. That makes this the quickest field in PSB history.
