Pro Stock Qualifying Notes, Final Session
Sat, 2 Aug 2003, 07:05 PM
Notes from final, round 4 qualifying in Pro Stock at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series,
16th annual FRAM-Autolite NHRA Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed
this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position
in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Ben Watson Runs 6.924/200.17, Now #26; Best prior run:
6.871/200.62, Was #26
Right Lane: Kurt Johnson Runs 6.796/203.77, Now #13; Best prior run:
6.852/202.12, Was #23
3:31 PM Current weather conditions: 81 degrees, 42 percent relative humidity,
the barometer 30.01 inches. The tail wind is picking up and track temperatures are up from
this morning. A number of the bikes ran better, with a couple running faster than the
current national MPH record. Yates is on the bump with a 6.822 ET. Last chance for
several of the big hitters. White knuckle time! The Johnson family can breath again. KJ
has a 1.009 60 foot time and makes the field for now.
Left Lane: George Marnell Runs 6.830/202.18, Now #21; Best prior run:
6.869/200.05, Was #25
Right Lane: V. Gaines Runs 6.879/201.73, Now #24; Best prior run:
6.845/202.48, Was #23
Alderman is now on the bump with a 6.820 ET. Marnell makes his best run of
the weekend, but it's just not enough for this stout field.
Left Lane: Mike Corvo Jr Runs 6.841/202.09, Now #24; Best prior run:
6.854/200.83, Was #25
Right Lane: Gordie Rivera Runs 8.369/108.25, Now #23; Best prior run:
6.839/202.12, Was #23
A little better for Corvo, but no help.
Left Lane: Terry Adams Runs 6.831/203.25, Now #22; Best prior run:
6.831/201.94, Was #22
Right Lane: Barry Grant Runs 6.860/201.97, Now #20; Best prior run:
6.826/202.30, Was #20
Lots of good runs, but little significant changes. Sixty foot numbers are down
for most of these competitors. No joy here.
Left Lane: Taylor Lastor Runs 6.854/202.33, Now #19; Best prior run:
6.824/202.06, Was #18
Right Lane: JR Carr Runs 6.817/202.24, Now #16; Best prior run: 6.825/202.82,
Was #19
Carr takes the bump spot and Alderman and Yates are up next!
Left Lane: Jim Yates Runs 6.824/201.55, Now #18; Best prior run:
6.822/201.97, Was #18
Right Lane: Darrell Alderman Runs 6.852/201.85, Now #17; Best prior run:
6.820/202.00, Was #17
Last chance to no chance. Yates has a 1.006 sixty foot ET, but slows from his
prior efforts. Alderman is game, but doesn't have the power to improve.
Left Lane: Mark Whisnant Runs 6.824/202.55, Now #12; Best prior run:
6.795/202.85, Was #12
Right Lane: Greg Stanfield Runs 6.830/202.21, Now #15; Best prior run:
6.810/202.79, Was #15
Looks like the last pair set the field. It's tough out there and these two
slow from earlier efforts.
Left Lane: Larry Morgan Runs 6.815/202.91, Now #10; Best prior run:
6.794/203.31, Was #10
Right Lane: Mark Pawuk Runs 6.818/200.65, Now #14; Best prior run:
6.796/202.09, Was #14
Once again, good passes, but no improvement.
Left Lane: Bruce Allen Runs 6.794/203.00, Now #10; Best prior run:
6.794/203.49, Was #9
Right Lane: Allen Johnson Runs 6.788/203.37, Now #6; Best prior run:
6.794/203.22, Was #11
Allen is able to repeat on his earlier pass. That's a big deal in this
session. Johnson makes the second big move of the session and jumps up into the top half
of the field for now.
Left Lane: Ron Krisher Runs 6.865/202.30, Now #9; Best prior run:
6.789/202.85, Was #9
Right Lane: Gene Wilson Runs 6.814/202.97, Now #8; Best prior run:
6.789/203.43, Was #8
Krisher has his hands full keeping the car straight. No improvement for
Wilson.
Left Lane: Warren Johnson Runs 6.798/203.71, Now #4; Best prior run:
6.785/204.23, Was #4
Right Lane: Dave Connolly Runs 6.800/203.34, Now #7; Best prior run:
6.788/202.76, Was #7
Two good passes in these conditions.
Left Lane: Mike Edwards Runs 6.799/202.70, Now #3; Best prior run:
6.784/203.19, Was #3
Right Lane: Scott Geoffrion Runs 6.849/203.22, Now #5; Best prior run:
6.788/203.98, Was #5
This may be the weather conditions that the PS cars see in the semi's
tomorrow.
Left Lane: Greg Anderson Runs 6.768/204.79, Now #1; Best prior run:
6.750/205.10, Was #1
Right Lane: Jeg Coughlin Runs 6.794/203.12, Now #2; Best prior run:
6.771/203.65, Was #2
Last pair to try to improve. Both cars are able to run close to their prior
times, but it's just too hot.
