Berner's Weekend Didn't Go As Planned
Mon, 3 Aug 2009, 09:26 PM
Pete Berner generally looks forward to the Martin, Mi. stop on the IHRA tour. It's his home race
and a track where he does much of his testing. However, things didn't quite turn out like he'd
hoped. The Quarter-Max.com GXP qualified sixth with a 6.353 at 219.12 mph. Berner was then set to
face off against number 11 qualifier, John Montecalvo, in round one. Despite having the performance
advantage as well as a better jump off the line, Berner ran into some problems on the track before
the 330 foot mark and was forced to abort the run early. Montecalvo, who stumbled off the starting
line, was able to regain power to take the easy win.
"Unfortunately we didn't do as well this weekend as we would normally like to," told Berner. "Our
consistency dropped off a bit. We struggled with a little bit of an engine problem, but we know
what's wrong with the motor so we'll get it fixed. Looking forward, we have two new motors done and
ready to test. So I'm looking forward to testing here at Martin the next couple days and racing
next week. Everyone has a bad weekend every now and then so we'll put this one behind us and move
forward.
"My hat's off to Monte and Frankie. Obviously their consistency was better than mine and they did a
great job getting to the final."
Berner is fourth in points after this race and with only three events left to go, he's looking to
make a move. "We have three races left and I'm determined to do well in those three. The next race
coming up is in Epping, New Hampshire. I won there last year so maybe I can repeat that and start
gaining on [points leader] Frankie. If determination has anything to do with it, I'm already
there."
