LAS VEGAS - Young Hunter Green, only in his second season driving a 12,000- horsepower nitro Funny Car, pulled off the first round upset Sunday at the Mopar NHRA Las Vegas Nationals powered by Dodge when he drove his CGM Bond-Coat Dodge//SRT hellcat past Alexis DeJoria.

H. Green, who qualified at 3.921 on Friday, was the underdog against the John Force Racing driver, but the Midland, Tex., racer cut a strong starting light and held the advantage to the finish line to advance to the quarterfinals against reigning world champion Austin Prock. Green's 3.923-second pass bettered DeJoria's 3.931 in Green's impressive round win.

In the tough quarterfinal matchup with Prock, Green gave a valiant effort with a 3.957 to the two- time world champion's strong 3.883 run. But the CGM team put in a strong performance in qualifying and eliminations after the massive engine explosion last month in Michigan.

"We have made some serious gains with our cars in the last few races," said H. Green. "You take the averages of recent runs and they have been strong. We have had some issues racing against former world champions in the early rounds in the last few months. We got a round one win and we needed that one. I'm cutting better (starting line) lights now as I get more used to the fuel car.

"Both my dad (Chad) and I have had tough matchups in the early rounds, and we haven't had much luck recently too. A couple of races my dad had the best losing time in the round that would have won numerous other races. But that is racing and we are getting better now with each race. Since the Michigan engine explosion, we put a new front half on my race car and things are coming around. My dad has won at Pomona before and that's our next race. So, we'll be ready to go."

Green's father, Chad, ran well in qualifying and eliminations Sunday at the Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Chad Green, the winner this year at the Gatornationals and Route 66 Nationals, had a solid qualifying with a best time of 3.905, but the businessman/racer was matched up against former world champion J.R. Todd in Sunday's opening round of eliminations.

Green recorded his best time of the Las Vegas weekend with a sensational 3.885 seconds, but Todd was quicker off the starting line and was able to nip Green at the finish line with a 3.909. Todd advanced to the quarterfinals where he beat current point leader Matt Hagan.

"That was a tough one since we ran a 3.88, our best time of the weekend," said C. Green. "We have been really improving the car in the last few races, and I was just not as quick as J.R. off the starting line. It's tough for me as the crew did their job with an excellent race car.

"Our bproauto Ford Mustang was very good, and we should have moved on to the next round. Plus, I'm very pleased how Hunter's car ran at Las Vegas, and that was a big win over Alexis in the first round. We will be ready for the upcoming Pomona race now."

The final race of the 20-event NHRA Mission Food Drag Racing Series will be the In-N-Out Burger NHRA Finals on Nov. 13-15 at the Los Angeles County Fairgrounds in Pomona, Calif. It is also the final event of the six-event "Countdown to the Championship." Nitro qualifying rounds will be competed on Friday, Nov. 13, at 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. PDT. Saturday's qualifying action is set for 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. PDT with Sunday's final eliminations scheduled for 11 a.m. PST. Television coverage with the final eliminations will be televised on Fox Sports 1 at 5 p.m. EST/2 p.m. PST.
