Top Alcohol Dragster Qualifying Notes, Session #2
Fri, 1 Aug 2003, 09:35 PM
Notes from round 2 qualifying in Top Alcohol Dragster at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series,
16th annual FRAM-Autolite NHRA Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this
round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order
prior to run:
Left Lane: Gary Anderson Runs 6.668/212.13, Now #12; Best prior run: 5.640/253.14,
Was #12
Right Lane: Tony Meredyk Runs 6.104/212.33, Now #16; Best prior run: 7.044/141.62,
Was #17
5:56 PM We've arrived at the second session for the 'Alcohol' Dragsters. The field
is mostly nitro powered cars but the blowers cars have made some noise in the first session.
Both cars in this pair were very flat sounding all the way down and the numbers reflect their
problems. Lots of dead holes between the two cars.
Left Lane: Steve Federlin Runs 5.526/254.04, Now #7; Best prior run: 5.470/259.41,
Was #7
Right Lane: Larry Miersch Runs 5.634/237.67, Now #10; Best prior run: 5.560/245.99,
Was #10
We've cooled down a little for this session but the barometer is not helping the
racers. Low pressure is coming in and the corrected altitude must be going up. Both racers slow
about a nickel from their earlier attempts.
Left Lane: Garrett Bateman No Time, Now #9; Best prior run: 5.524/248.89, Was #9
Right Lane: Don Hudson Runs 5.431/257.43, Now #4; Best prior run: 5.454/261.17, Was
#6
Bateman rattles the chute out on the burnout and has to motor slowly to the top end.
Hudson waited and it was no harm as he is one of the few blown cars in the show this weekend.
Hudson actually picks up a bit from the first session and moves up two spots.
Left Lane: Mitch Myers Runs 5.523/244.96, Now #5; Best prior run: 5.444/255.15, Was
#5
Right Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 10.363/78.17, Now #17; Best prior run: 6.966/181.06,
Was #17
Beckman had problems in the first session and is currently holding down the 17th
spot in a 16 car field. Myers is solid in the top half going in. Beckman still has problems and
remains outside the show. Myers slows from his first hit and remains #5.
Left Lane: Darryl Hitchman Runs 5.587/246.62, Now #3; Best prior run: 5.393/255.53,
Was #3
Right Lane: Chris Lane Runs 5.560/226.70, Now #11; Best prior run: 5.640/227.61, Was
#13
Hitchman is way off from his first hit and slows about two tenths. Lane is one of
the few in the session to improve and he picks up two spots.
Left Lane: Duane Shields Runs 5.464/258.12, Now #7; Best prior run: 5.608/243.90,
Was #12
Right Lane: Alan Bradshaw Runs 5.381/239.57, Now #2; Best prior run: 5.370/237.46,
Was #2
Bradshaw slows just a little from his first round time but Shields, in the blown
car, picks up a tenth and a half and six spots in the field. He also picked up about fifteen mph
to boot.
Left Lane: Darren Nicholson Runs 5.437/241.24, Now #5; Best prior run:
5.478/264.91, Was #9
Right Lane: Chris Demke Runs 5.506/254.33, Now #10; Best prior run: 5.828/253.85,
Was #15
We have a pair of blown alcohol cars about to make a side by side qualifying
attempt. That's unusual. Demke makes the big move here and moves up five spots. Nicholson four
hundredths and four spots in the show. Things are really tight in the top half.
Left Lane: Randy Eakins Runs 5.723/229.20, Now #15; Best prior run: 5.643/239.02,
Was #15
Right Lane: Mark Niver Runs 5.561/245.49, Now #7; Best prior run: 5.449/254.28, Was
#7
Eakins has several holes out from start to finish in the left lane. There was a big
puff from the engine as he neared the lights but the track appears to be clean as the Safari has
a quick look and goes back to their positions. Niver appeared to spin the tires off the line and
he slows from his first round.
Left Lane: Morgan Lucas Runs 5.431/257.58, Now #1; Best prior run: 5.345/269.24,
Was #1
Lucas is the final car before we start the Pro session. Lucas remains #1 but he
slows about the same as the rest of the cars have in this session.
