Wilk to Race From 15th Spot After Rain Washes Out Q4
Sat, 15 Aug 2009, 10:42 PM
Tim Wilkerson knew something was wrong with his race car after his lap in the third qualifying
session on Saturday. The car again dropped a cylinder, sashayed wildly from right to left, and
posted only a 4.329 that allowed him to slip as low as the 15th spot on the grid. Before the
session could end, however, the first of many persistent rain showers hit the BIR area, and by 6:00
it was impossible to continue. Wilkerson will, therefore, race out of the 15th slot and will face
Ron Capps in round one.
"I really wanted to get back out there, because I'm about as sure as I can be that we fixed the
problem, and I wanted a shot at moving back up the ladder," Wilkerson said. "But, the junk rolled
in and we sat around and watched it rain all day. I still feel good about the car, and I
absolutely believe we'll be able to give Ron and Ace (McCulloch) a good fight, but it would've been
great to get that last run in and step it up.
"Now we're hearing all sorts of different forecasts for tomorrow, including one where they say it
might barely get over 70. From what they told me, though, the one website that said 70 for a high
is the same one that said it wasn't raining here all afternoon, so go figure. Whatever it does,
we'll just stick to our normal race day plan, try to run the best lap we can put on the board, and
we'll see where the chips fall. Let's just hope it's dry."
