MEMPHIS - Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session # 3
By Rick Green

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Notes from round 3 qualifying in Funny Car at the 11th annual Pennzoil Nationals presented by AutoZone, listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, (best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run):
Left Lane: Frank Pedregon No Time Now #12, (Best prior run: 5.334/272.83 Was #12)
Right Lane: Bob Weickgenannt No Time Now #18, (Best prior run: 6.317/171.44 Was #18)

Pedregon starts to haze the tires and then around half-track really starts to mix up the cylinders. He then gets out of it. Weickgenannt starts to smoke the tires, pedals it one time and then starts heading toward the centerline. He collects the timing cones at the finishline, so his time will not count and Pedregon's will not either. For the record Weickgenannt ran a 5.307 at 257.03.

Left Lane: Al Hofmann Runs 5.273/215.51 Now #11, (Best prior run: 10.564/ 82.30 Was #21)

Hofmann loses traction and cylinders, getting the car sideways, yet still runs quick enough to make the show and bump out Jack Wyatt. No help for Epler.
