MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Notes from final, round 4 qualifying in Pro Stock at the 11th annual Pennzoil Nationals presented by AutoZone, listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, (best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run): Left Lane: Larry Morgan Runs 7.034/196.99 Now #15, (Best prior run: 6.955/197.74 Was #15) Right Lane: Steve Schmidt Runs 6.994/197.77 Now #14, (Best prior run: 6.954/198.20 Was #14) 3:26 PM and it's now or never in the Pro Stock ranks, as the final session begins with the bump spot at 6.955, just a tic away from being the quickest ever. The sun is shining brightly and the temp is up to the low seventies, so I doubt we'll see much change in the order. Left Lane: Shawn Collins Runs 6.981/197.65 Now #16, (Best prior run: 6.955/197.57 Was #16) Right Lane: Mark Thomas Runs 13.801/ 58.35 Now #33, (Best prior run: 14.435/ 57.21 Was #33) Thomas did the same thing as in the earlier round, the car getting the front wheels up and heading left toward the centerline. Thomas had to lift to get the steering wheel connected to the asphalt, and that ends his shot at the show. Collins goes early and now has to sweat out the rest of the session. Left Lane: Ray Franks Runs 7.040/196.47 Now #12, (Best prior run: 6.948/198.32 Was #12) Right Lane: Mark Pawuk Runs 8.858/105.95 Now # 9, (Best prior run: 6.941/197.57 Was # 9) The Summit machine gets loose and shuts off, while Franks motors on past. Left Lane: Larry Nance Runs 10.473/ 86.34 Now #20, (Best prior run: 6.997/196.67 Was #20) Right Lane: Tom Martino Runs 6.979/197.42 Now #17, (Best prior run: 6.958/197.62 Was #17) Nance has Buddy Ingersoll and Dale Eicke in his camp this weekend, but it's not enough to get him into the show this afternoon. He shakes the tires like an alky Funny Car here, some of the worst we've seen in a doorslammer. Gaines shakes the tires pretty hard off the line. Left Lane: Mike Thomas Runs 14.049/ 58.98 Now # 8, (Best prior run: 6.939/198.29 Was # 8) Right Lane: Jim Yates Runs 6.954/198.20 Now # 2, (Best prior run: 6.884/198.79 Was # 2) Thomas' tires go square off the line, and that's all she wrote. Left Lane: Jeg Coughlin Runs 13.680/ 60.34 Now # 5, (Best prior run: 6.935/198.17 Was # 5) Right Lane: Ron Krisher Runs 9.742/ 94.36 Now #10, (Best prior run: 6.942/198.29 Was #10) Coughlin shook and shut off early, and it was a good thing as Krisher got loose and crossed over into his lane, taking out the timing reflectors at the 660' mark, both ET and speed. Left Lane: Rickie Smith Runs 6.973/197.16 Now #18, (Best prior run: 6.988/196.73 Was #19) Right Lane: Bob Kropfield Runs 8.606/120.03 Now #29, (Best prior run: 7.139/194.83 Was #29) We're back to action after a short break to clean all the little foam pieces off the racing surface. Smith actually improves and still doesn't crack into the show. Left Lane: Mike Edwards Runs 11.842/ 74.23 Now #23, (Best prior run: 7.005/195.96 Was #23) Right Lane: John Nobile Runs 6.987/198.52 Now # 6, (Best prior run: 6.937/198.29 Was # 6) Edwards shakes the tires and the Indy winner fails to make the show here. Left Lane: Allen Johnson Runs 7.048/196.13 Now #27, (Best prior run: 7.059/194.24 Was #27) Right Lane: Richie Stevens Runs 6.948/198.09 Now # 3, (Best prior run: 6.915/198.32 Was # 3) Johnson is running a Dale Eicke engine this weekend, but fails to get it sorted out in time to make the show. That's the best time of the round by the young Stevens. Left Lane: Danny Coffman Runs 16.996/ 47.12 Now #26, (Best prior run: 7.045/195.19 Was #26) Right Lane: Bruce Allen Runs 7.053/196.64 Now #19, (Best prior run: 6.978/196.33 Was #19) Coffman shook and shut off, while Allen shook and continued. Left Lane: Mark Osborne Runs 6.998/197.48 Now # 4, (Best prior run: 6.919/198.47 Was # 4) Mark spun the tires a bit off the line, a 1.04 sort time, but still turns in a respectable performance. Left Lane: Arturo Delgado Runs 7.064/196.13 Now #24, (Best prior run: 7.025/197.10 Was #24) We think this is the final car of the round, and the category. And that's it, Shawn Collins hangs onto the bump spot so he'll get to face off against WJ in round one tomorrow morning. That's a wrap!
