MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Pro Stock at the 11th annual Pennzoil Nationals presented by AutoZone, listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, position in order following run:

Left Lane: Jeff Wick Runs 8.481/119.42 Psn # 1
Right Lane: Joel Bayless Runs 10.288/ 89.28 Psn # 2

4:19 PM and the sun is shining brightly on the racing surface, but if the previous performances are any indication we'll have a record field, regardless. But it won't be because of these two...

Left Lane: Wayne Hutton Runs 7.214/191.67 Psn # 1
Right Lane: Dester Cambron No Time Psn # 4

Cambron's crew signals him to shut it off after the burnout, but there's no oil or anything on the track.

Left Lane: Pete Williams Runs 9.452/ 95.37 Psn # 4
Right Lane: Kurt Johnson Runs 9.245/ 90.00 Psn # 3

Left Lane: Jim Yates Runs 7.867/133.18 Psn # 2
Right Lane: V. Gaines Runs 8.761/185.30 Psn # 4

Yates rolled the lights bigtime, and then shut off at 700'.

Right Lane: Mike Thomas Runs 10.059/ 89.97 Psn # 8

Looks like lots of folks are having problems in that right lane.

Looks like Nobile is still holding Larry Morgan's best engine hostage... and I don't blame him.

Stevens takes over the #1 slot by only 0.004 seconds.

Right Lane: Allen Johnson Runs 7.092/194.72 Psn # 7

Looks like we're seeing occasional flashes of brilliance in this round, nd Allen's run is one of them.

Right Lane: Danny Coffman Runs 17.417/ 45.60 Psn #19

Both cars get loose and shut off.

Martino is still in the Benza machine this weekend, and they've added the world-renowned tuned Kenny Thom to the team for the remainder of '98. Nice pass, here.

Looked like WJ had a lot of wheelspin to me, but regardless he manages to take over the top spot, ET and MPH.

Bump spot has worked its way down to Kropfield's 7.139, with just a few cars remaining.

Actually only one car remains... this one. And he gets loose and shuts off, so with one round in the books it's WJ on the top and Bob Kropfield on the bubble.
