Kelly and Payne Lead Winners in Montgomery

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Guy Kelly of Wadley, Ala., captured his first win of the season while Jay Payne drove his '02 Camaro to his third win at Montgomery Motorsports Park and the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series.

Kelly, who is the defending Top Alcohol Dragster event champion, won over Don Fiorelli in his semifinal match up and then had a bye run in the final for the win.

Jared Dreher won over Artie Allen in round 1 but broke the car and could not make the call for his semifinal round. Not making the call for the semifinal which was to be a bye run, resulted in a no-winner semifinal giving Kelly the final round bye and the win.

Payne, who won the Southeast Division season opener in Bradenton, Fla., meet up with Montgomery, Ala., racer Montgomery Todd in the Top Alcohol Funny Car final round match-up, taking the win in 6.017 seconds at 242.44 mph. Todd left early causing a red-light start and the automatic win for Payne who leads the division points and was fifth in national points going into this weekend's event.

Todd meet up with John Sullivan, also of Montgomery, Ala., in his semifinal match up, taking the win in 6.534 seconds at 208.38 mph to Sullivan's 8.957, 96.69 mph pass.

Comp Eliminator saw Craig Bourgeois knock off David Eaton in 7.068 seconds at 174.24 mph for the win while Billy Vaughn won in the division's Tracstar Systems Satellites Top Sportsman class. The Knoxville, Tenn., racer covered the quarter-mile in 7.694 seconds, 151.48 mph.

Joe LoCicero put his '88 Camaro in the winner's circle with a pass of 9.905 seconds at 125.52 mph in taking out Jimbo Fields with a time of 10.257, 125.94 in Super Stock.

Joining in with wins were Rod Johnson in Stock Eliminator over Jimmy Parker; Ray Miller of Spring Hill, Fla., in Super Comp; Steve Fuller over Sherman Adcock Jr. in Super Gas; and Jeff Goodman and his '67 Nova out of Hendersonville, Tenn., in Super Street.

The Southeast Division racers head to South Georgia Motorsports Park for a doubleheader NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event, August 5-7.
