Funny Car Time Trial Notes, Session #5

CLERMONT, Ind. - Notes from round 5 time trials in Funny Car at the NHRA, Indianapolis Test Session listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 6.125/158.07, Now #6; Best prior run: 5.229/207.72, Was #6

2:42 p.m. Beckman's run looked pretty good for about 500 feet, then he lost traction. Jack Beckman's incremental times: 60ft-0.924 sec., 330ft-2.387, 660ft-3.529/195.39mph, 1,000ft-4.804.

Left Lane: Gary Densham Runs 9.030/106.99, Now #7; Best prior run: 7.420/114.45, Was #7

2:53 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 87 degrees, relative humidity 61 percent, barometer 29.20 inches, adjusted altitude 3,066 feet, track temperature 131 degrees.

Densham got about 100 feet, then smoked 'em. Gary Densham's incremental times: 60ft-0.918 sec., 330ft-2.802, 660ft-4.946/106.84mph, 1,000ft-7.047


Left Lane: Gary Scelzi Runs 11.751/72.35, Now #2; Best prior run: 4.869/321.19, Was #2

3:01 p.m. Scelzi launched, it sounded like the car was shaking, then the engine abruptly shut off. Gary Scelzi's incremental times: 60ft-0.908 sec., 330ft-2.860, 660ft-5.591/077.14mph, 1,000ft-8.738

Left Lane: Ron Capps Runs 10.272/82.85, Now #1; Best prior run: 4.852/317.12, Was #1

3:09 p.m. Capps didn't fare much better, losing traction at about the same place as most others. Ron Capps' incremental times: 60ft-0.910 sec., 330ft-2.692, 660ft-5.035/090.53mph, 1,000ft-7.723.

Left Lane: Melanie Troxel Runs 9.690/82.20, Now #8; No Prior Run

3:12 p.m. Melanie Troxel made her first licensing pass in Mike Ashley's car. The car left clean and straight, then lost traction about 200 feet out. Melanie Troxel's incremental times: 60ft-0.914 sec., 330ft-2.587, 660ft-4.601/104.57mph, 1,000ft-7.072

Left Lane: Kenny Bernstein Runs 10.322/80.82, Now #5; Best prior run: 5.010/264.18, Was #5

3:24 p.m. Bernstein's run looked about like all the other recent runs, up in smoke after 150 feet or so. Kenny Bernstein's incremental times: 60ft-0.913 sec., 330ft-2.638, 660ft-4.928/091.36mph, 1,000ft-7.653.

3:29 p.m. We have a lull right now and it's the hottest part of the day, so we'll send this batch of reports and wait for action to pick up again.
