POMONA, Calif. - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Pro Stock at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 40th annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Fernando Cuadra Runs 6.777/204.20, Now #15; No Prior Run
2:41 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 68 degrees, relative humidity 54 percent, barometer 28.85 inches, adjusted altitude 2,089 feet, track temperature 96 degrees.
Cuadra broke yesterday on his first attempt and today he comes back with a really nice run that
most likely will not hold up.
Left Lane: Tony Rizzo Runs 7.906/143.05, Now #24; Best prior run: 6.854/202.21, Was #23
Right Lane: Jeg Coughlin Runs 6.781/204.82, Now #16; Best prior run: 13.397/65.79, Was #27
Rizzo has the car head straight for the wall on the left side of the lane. He has no choice but to lift. Coughlin gets the run he most likely was looking for yesterday for a baseline. He's in on the bump and that's just not going to stick in this session.
Left Lane: Gordie Rivera Runs 6.808/202.21, Now #21; Best prior run: 6.820/202.85, Was #23
Right Lane: Arturo Delgado No Time, Now #27; Best prior run: 6.888/195.14, Was #27
Delgado breaks right off the starting line and timing and scoring stops the clocks before he can cross the finish line. Rivera is just a taste slow.
Left Lane: Bob Panella Runs 6.814/203.06, Now #23; Best prior run: 6.815/203.22, Was #23
Right Lane: Scott Geoffrion Runs 6.818/203.68, Now #24; Best prior run: 6.873/203.22, Was #26
No one has the good motor this weekend as these two are dead even. Both are well off the pace at the moment. They just don't have a very large log book on the cars this season so tuning is a bit of a problem.
Left Lane: Bruce Allen Runs 6.776/203.43, Now #15; Best prior run: 6.813/202.15, Was #22
Right Lane: Barry Grant Runs 6.834/201.61, Now #25; Best prior run: 6.859/201.67, Was #26
Allen moves into the show at #15 and makes Coughlin #17. Grant will need the Saturday sessions.
Left Lane: Jim Yates Runs 6.831/203.06, Now #19; Best prior run: 6.787/203.80, Was #19
Right Lane: Mark Pawuk Runs 6.805/201.97, Now #21; Best prior run: 6.803/202.27, Was #21
Yates car made a wicked move at about 100 feet and Yates had his hands full pulling it back to the center of the lane. Pawuk misses the setup and remains out of the show.
Left Lane: Mark Whisnant Runs 6.781/202.79, Now #18; Best prior run: 6.781/203.43, Was #18
Right Lane: Warren Johnson Runs 6.793/203.58, Now #20; Best prior run: 6.795/203.31, Was #20
WJ just continues to chase what ever the DRCE 3 is looking for. The cars not bad, it's just not good enough. Whisnant will look for a setup before Saturday as well.
Left Lane: Ben Watson Runs 6.792/203.16, Now #14; Best prior run: 6.776/203.46, Was #14
Right Lane: Jerry Haas Runs 6.820/203.28, Now #12; Best prior run: 6.770/204.11, Was #12
Both drivers are in the show before the run but fail to improve.
Left Lane: Allen Johnson Runs 6.774/203.09, Now #13; Best prior run: 6.775/203.61, Was #13
Right Lane: Kurt Johnson Runs 6.795/203.83, Now #11; Best prior run: 6.766/204.08, Was #11
The numbers down low continue to amaze me, but they don't translate into big numbers at the other end. Johnson had a .987 60 foot number and Kurt Johnson had a .996. Both drivers are status quo in qualifying.
Left Lane: Kenny Koretsky Runs 12.284/71.76, Now #7; Best prior run: 6.744/205.26, Was #7
Right Lane: V. Gaines Runs 6.751/204.76, Now #8; Best prior run: 6.754/204.88, Was #10
Koretsky gets loose early and calls it off. Gaines picks up .003 and two show positions.
Left Lane: Dave Connolly Runs 6.763/203.92, Now #6; Best prior run: 6.744/205.35, Was #6
Right Lane: Rickie Smith Runs 6.762/204.05, Now #10; Best prior run: 6.753/203.92, Was #10
Connolly had to really fight the car to keep it in the middle of the lane. The groove here is pretty narrow and the Cavalier kept trying to go right on him. Smith slows slightly in the right lane.
Left Lane: Larry Morgan Runs 6.725/205.22, Now #2; Best prior run: 6.733/205.22, Was #4
Right Lane: Steve Johns Runs 6.758/204.98, Now #9; Best prior run: 6.751/204.17, Was #9
Morgan has a .983 60 foot number and this time it carries over to the finish. He moves to #2 behind Anderson and moves Edwards to #3.
Left Lane: Mike Edwards Runs 6.746/203.89, Now #3; Best prior run: 6.728/204.76, Was #3
Right Lane: Ron Krisher Runs 6.765/204.39, Now #5; Best prior run: 6.739/204.17, Was #5
Edwards can't pick the spot back up and remains #3. Krisher just about duplicates his Thursday pass.
Left Lane: Greg Anderson Runs 6.713/205.10, Now #1; Best prior run: 6.717/205.94, Was #1
Right Lane: Jason Line Runs 6.752/204.70, Now #4; Best prior run: 6.729/204.82, Was #4
Anderson holds on to the top spot in the class and improves very slightly from Thursday. Line came in #2 but can't climb back into the spot. That's all for Pro Stock.
