POMONA, Calif. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Pro Stock Bike at the 36th annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals listing lane, rider name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:

Right Lane: Kevin Smith Runs 8.010/165.82, Now #1

2:25 PM Smith opens the first round on a solo pass, clean and straight, but off-pace.

Left Lane: Fred Camarena No Time, Now #3
Right Lane: Larry Cook Runs 7.465/175.48, Now #1

Camarena came up on the timing screen, but never showed up at the starting line.

Left Lane: David Feazell Runs 7.784/166.85, Now #3
Right Lane: Greg Underdahl Runs 7.445/173.96, Now #1

Feazell has been the quickest and fastest Harley several times this year. Here he's a bit off his own best pace. Nice pass by Underdahl.

Left Lane: Lori Francis No Time, Now #7
Right Lane: Mike Berry Runs 13.523/121.08, Now #5

Both broke, Francis appearing to break a chain on the launch and Berry missing a shift about 100 feet out, the RPMs shooting way up there.

Left Lane: Hector Arana Runs 7.517/172.89, Now #3
Right Lane: Brian DeLong Runs 7.749/159.59, Now #4

Delong's bike was very slow off the line. Clean pass for Hector.

Left Lane: Clarence Markham Runs 7.719/174.03, Now #5
Right Lane: Brian Ayers Runs 7.529/176.49, Now #4

Markham lost a bunch of ET early in the run.

Left Lane: Joe DeSantis Runs 14.046/48.15, Now #10
Right Lane: Reggie Showers Runs 23.164/24.07, Now #11

DeSantis' bike shook the rear tire and headed for the 330-foot marker, forcing him to shut it down to stay in his lane - barely managing to do so. Showers broke on the launch and coasted through.

Left Lane: Steve Johnson Runs 7.449/173.99, Now #3
Right Lane: Blaine Hale Runs 7.439/177.56, Now #1

Good run by Hale to put the Kawasaki on the (very early) pole. Not so bad for Johnson either.

Left Lane: Shawn Gann Runs 7.868/130.29, Now #11
Right Lane: Craig Treble Runs 7.367/180.65, Now #1

Treble ended Hale's reign at one pair - oh well...nice run by Treble. Gann was on a good pass, but there was a puff of smoke from the engine at half track and he slowed on the top end.

Left Lane: Geno Scali Runs 7.339/180.38, Now #1
Right Lane: John Smith Runs 7.413/181.25, Now #3

Smith is on the Sunoco bike this weekend, David Schultz undergoing another round of chemo-therapy in his battle with cancer. Great run by Scali, clean and straight.

Left Lane: Antron Brown Runs 9.055/100.53, Now #15
Right Lane: Tony Mullen No Time, Now #19

Team 23 makes its last appearance as a two-bike team. Both slowed at half track, coasting the rest of the way.

Left Lane: Matt Hines Runs 7.279/183.17, Now #1
Right Lane: Angelle Seeling Runs 7.339/174.68, Now #3

These two put Scali in a sandwich, Hines the class of the field today, his 1.11 60- foot time and Angelle's 1.09 the two best 60-foot times of the session.

A number of bikes had problems on the top end of their runs, possibly because of the very stiff crosswind blowing from right to left, the left-hand grandstands ending at about half track.
