NOBLE, Okla. - Notes from final, round 3 qualifying in Federal-Mogul Dragster at the NHRA Division 4 Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series Finale listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Mark Hentges Runs 8.655/97.11, Now #1; Best prior run: 5.467/260.11, Was #1
Right Lane: Troy Buff Runs 5.572/254.30, Now #5; Best prior run: 5.645/254.23, Was #6
6:15 PM Hentges chattered the tires for the first 200 feet where he then pitched the blower belt.
Left Lane: Larry Traugott Runs 5.828/243.04, Now #10; Best prior run: 5.768/241.74, Was #10
Right Lane: Gene Snow Runs 7.471/121.31, Now #8; Best prior run: 5.697/252.52, Was #8
Snow lost a cylinder immediately and it wouldn't come back. He was off the throttle by the half track markers. Traugott fails to make it into this tough field.
Left Lane: James Thompson No Time, Now #11; Best prior run: 5.826/246.10, Was #11
Right Lane: Shelly Howard No Time, Now #6; Best prior run: 5.620/252.17, Was #6
The rear wing on Howard's car dropped back before half track. It took a tick or two for her to realize it and by then she was out of control. She took out the finish line cones, hit the right retaining wall hard, and bounced back across both lanes, the engine a ball of fire by then.
She was removed from the car conscious, alert and talking. Track emergency
personnel checked her condition. The word at this time is she may have suffered a
hand injury, but other than that, it appears to be just bumps and bruises. She is
up and walking around, apparently in good enough shape that she turned down a trip
to the hospital.
Left Lane: Jay Meyer Runs 8.240/104.71, Now #4; Best prior run: 5.554/250.20, Was #4
Right Lane: Alan Bradshaw Runs 5.702/248.55, Now #7; Best prior run: 5.673/248.41, Was #7
8:15 PM We had a little less than two hours of down time. When Shelly Howard's car bounced off the right retaining wall, it crossed both lanes and hit the section of the left retaining wall where the turn off gate was located. It damaged the gate beyond repair and it had to be replaced.
Meyer was off the throttle by half track, the reason not apparent from
Left Lane: Lee Callaway Runs 5.994/234.49, Now #13; Best prior run: 5.975/234.43, Was #13
Right Lane: Randy Meyer Runs 5.987/239.48, Now #14; Best prior run: 6.082/216.03, Was #14
Meyer had problems with the burnout again. He did get the tires to spin more than they did in the previous round. He didn't go up in smoke again, but wasn't quick enough to make the show tomorrow.
Left Lane: Bruce Bowler Runs 15.873/20.19, Now #2; Best prior run: 5.480/255.39, Was #2
Right Lane: Kent Nuckols No Time, Now #9; Best prior run: 5.707/249.37, Was #9
Bowler was up in smoke almost immediately. Nuckols' lane showed a 5.468 ET on the CompuLink monitor. Trouble was, it showed the number before Nuckols crossed the finish line. He was having trouble keeping the car in the groove and his speed at half track was 153 MPH. That speed would not be consistent with a 5.468 ET, so the run was disallowed. Best guess is some kind of insect tripped the timing light, there's a fair number of bugs in the air this evening.
Left Lane: Rick Santos Runs 5.575/248.89, Now #5; Best prior run: 5.504/257.65, Was #3
Santos has a very smooth run here, no tire shake at all, but it wasn't quick enough to move him up the ladder.
Right Lane: Michael Bowers Runs 6.459/216.39, Now #15; Best prior run: 6.362/222.33, Was #15
Bowers had a couple cylinders out on the hit and it was over from there.
Right Lane: Jeff Hamelink Runs 7.383/127.24, Now #19; Best prior run: 15.686/44.02, Was #19
Hamelink lifted the front end into the air on the launch, and when he brought it down the car was out of the groove. He clicked it off before half track.
Due to Shelly Howard's accident, the first alternate, Kent Nuckols will probably be
racing in her spot tomorrow.
