By Larry Sullivan

Field Gets Quicker, WJ Still Not #1

BAYTOWN, Texas - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Pro Stock at the 2nd annual Matco Tools Supernationals, listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, (best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run):
Left Lane: Bruce Allen Runs 7.035/194.51 Now #19, (Best prior run: 7.034/195.86 Was #19)
Right Lane: Troy Coughlin Runs 7.663/138.67 Now #24, (Best prior run: 7.097/196.97 Was #24)

6:10 PM This should be the round that sets the sixteen-car field for Sunday - but tomorrow's first session should also be under good conditions, so don't pay off any bets until tomorrow night.

Allen virtually duplicated his earlier run, not a good sign, and Troy's handling problems continued.

Left Lane: Steve Schmidt Runs 6.969/197.36 Now # 4, (Best prior run: 7.014/197.06 Was # 9)
Right Lane: Shawn Collins Runs 7.007/196.54 Now # 8, (Best prior run: 7.004/196.72 Was # 7)

Collins' car drifted left all the way down the track.

Left Lane: Rickie Smith Runs 6.996/196.29 Now # 8, (Best prior run: 7.018/196.42 Was #11)
Right Lane: Larry Nance Runs 7.031/196.03 Now #17, (Best prior run: 7.067/195.69 Was #23)

Smith posted a 1.03 60-foot time. The bump is currently Tom Martino's 1.030.

Lots of shuffling going on tonight.

Right Lane: Mark Osborne Runs 6.983/197.32 Now # 7, (Best prior run: 7.035/196.03 Was #22)

Osborne laid down a nice, straight run here to jump into the field and put Allen Johnson on the bubble at 7.029.

Left Lane: Kurt Johnson Runs 6.920/198.67 Now # 1, (Best prior run: 6.940/199.46 Was # 3)
Right Lane: Allen Johnson Runs 7.030/195.90 Now #16, (Best prior run: 7.029/196.80 Was #16)

And here's Johnson, trying to put the Eicke engine to good use and get off the bubble - but he comes up short. Kurt doesn't come up short, however, displacing Dad atop the ladder.

Right Lane: Larry Morgan Runs 7.035/196.24 Now #19, (Best prior run: 7.032/196.76 Was #19)

Headlights gleaming, Morgan comes up short in the ET department. Martino does a nice job, however, straight to the top part of the field. Ron Krisher is now on the bubble at 7.024.

Left Lane: Joel Bayless Runs 9.744/ 94.51 Now #25, (Best prior run: 7.132/193.67 Was #25)

Right Lane: Pete Williams Runs 7.017/196.37 Now #17, (Best prior run: 9.372/101.22 Was #30)
