By Rick Green

Quick and Clean

ENNIS, Texas - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Top Fuel at the 13th annual NHRA Revell Nationals, listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, position in order following run:
Left Lane: Don Lampus Runs 4.760/305.39 Psn # 2
Right Lane: Cristen Powell Runs 4.698/295.46 Psn # 1

A couple great passes to start this session; Lampus with his first-ever pass in NHRA competition. He shows us he is ready to play with the big boys and girls. Mike Kloeber is no longer the crew chief for Cristen, Ray Alley has assumed the crew chief duties for the balance of the season.

Left Lane: Randy Parks Runs 4.780/304.15 Psn # 4
Right Lane: Mike Dunn Runs 4.644/309.70 Psn # 1

Dunn takes over the number one spot for now with another clean pass. The Mopar entry has become a consistent 4.60's car lately. Parks with one of his better passes.

Left Lane: Doug Herbert Runs 4.716/310.66 Psn # 3
Right Lane: Jim Head Runs 4.744/309.38 Psn # 4

The Kings of Speed are have no trouble negotiating this track, a couple more good clean passes. This might be good enough for Herbert to be able to go to Shreveport to finish the race over there tomorrow.

Left Lane: Doug Kalitta Runs 4.678/312.50 Psn # 3
Right Lane: Gary Scelzi Runs 4.656/273.30 Psn # 2

The hits just keep coming. Scelzi loses an engine right before the lights, and still runs a great 4.656. Scelzi's mile per hour at half track was 261.93, so that shows you how much he fell off on the top end.

Left Lane: Tony Schumacher Runs 4.738/302.01 Psn # 7
Right Lane: Kenny Bernstein Runs 4.586/318.80 Psn # 1

The King of Speed takes Louie the Lizard to the fastest pass of the weekend, so far. This is a fantastic session as the slowest car so far is Schumacher at 4.780.

Left Lane: Steve Smith Runs 4.809/308.74 Psn #12
Right Lane: Eddie Hill Runs 4.626/309.06 Psn # 2

The Texan always runs well in front of the home crowd and he does not disappoint them here. Smith with the fastest pass of his career.

Left Lane: Cory McClenathan Runs 4.965/209.20 Psn #14
Right Lane: Connie Kalitta Runs 4.709/308.85 Psn # 7

McClenathan loses power on the top end, could have been the blower belt.

Left Lane: Bruce Sarver Runs 6.411/127.38 Psn #16
Right Lane: Bob Vandergriff Runs 4.668/285.80 Psn # 5

Sarver starts to chatter the tires and clicks it off. Vandergriff's engine lets go in the light with a big flash of fire.

Left Lane: Terry Mullins Runs 5.100/250.41 Psn #17
Right Lane: Joe Amato Runs 4.605/318.13 Psn # 2

Mullins launches hard then pulls the front tires around the 330-foot mark, meanwhile Amato marches straight down the quarter-mile, and slips right in behind Bernstein.

Left Lane: Larry Dixon Runs 4.586/311.31 Psn # 2
Right Lane: Shelly Anderson Runs 11.177/ 68.40 Psn #20

Dixon with just a wisp of tire smoke just half track, but still his quick enough for the number two spot. Anderson starts to shake the tires and clicks it off. That was the last two cars of this session. Bernstein stays on top while Smith holds onto the bump with 4.809 seconds. We are well on the way to the quickest field in Top Fuel.
