ENNIS - Pro Stock Qualifying Notes, Session # 2
By Ed Dykes

Slipping and Sliding in Tejas

ENNIS, Texas - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Pro Stock at the 13th annual NHRA Revell Nationals, listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, (best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run):
Left Lane: Ron Krisher Runs 10.739/ 81.54 Now #11, (Best prior run: 6.981/198.15 Was #11)
Right Lane: Shawn Collins Runs 14.700/ 56.67 Now #30, (Best prior run: 13.031/ 65.29 Was #30)

8:01 PM and the first two cars are off the throttle almost immediately. After all the action of the truck round, these guys are really keyed up in the staging lanes.

Left Lane: Larry Nance Runs 7.034/194.97 Now #20, (Best prior run: 7.026/196.07 Was #20)
Right Lane: Mike Edwards Runs 6.978/196.50 Now #11, (Best prior run: 6.997/196.67 Was #16)

Edwards moves off the bump, which most staging lane pundits predict will be somewhere around 6.95 before the night is done. We'll see...

Left Lane: Danny Coffman Runs 9.396/ 92.53 Now #24, (Best prior run: 7.057/195.65 Was #24)
Right Lane: Rickie Smith Runs 9.055/ 96.85 Now #14, (Best prior run: 6.984/196.80 Was #14)

This is one tricky race track, that's for sure. Billy Meyer had the entire surface scraped, wall to wall, before the event, but it hasn't seemed to make things much better.

Left Lane: Richie Stevens Runs 6.905/198.41 Now # 3, (Best prior run: 6.951/198.36 Was # 7)
Right Lane: Mark Pawuk Runs 6.897/199.07 Now # 2, (Best prior run: 7.032/196.03 Was #21)

Pawuk makes a career-best pass in the Summit Racing Pontiac to move right in behind the GM Goodwrench Pontiac of WJ.

Left Lane: Mark Osborne Runs 6.971/197.02 Now # 4, (Best prior run: 6.921/198.36 Was # 4)
Right Lane: Tom Martino Runs 6.976/197.15 Now # 7, (Best prior run: 6.937/199.02 Was # 7)

Left Lane: John Nobile Runs 14.871/ 56.17 Now #11, (Best prior run: 6.978/198.32 Was #11)
Right Lane: Larry Morgan Runs 7.073/196.89 Now #23, (Best prior run: 7.052/196.85 Was #23)

Nobile gets completely sideways right off the line, here.

Left Lane: V. Gaines Runs 8.004/120.77 Now #14, (Best prior run: 6.981/197.62 Was #14)
Right Lane: Joel Bayless Runs 8.901/ 99.61 Now #28, (Best prior run: 8.555/109.48 Was #28)

I neglected to mention that Larry Morgan is running a manual shifter this weekend, as will be required in 1999. Both cars get loose and click it off this time.

Left Lane: Arturo Delgado Runs 21.473/ 31.42 Now # 9, (Best prior run: 6.957/199.11 Was # 9)
Right Lane: Jeg Coughlin Runs 6.907/199.42 Now # 4, (Best prior run: 6.945/198.71 Was # 8)

Delgado's car jumped straight up in the air when he let out the clutch, that was really strange. Nice move up the ladder by Coughlin, here.

Left Lane: Mike Thomas Runs 8.337/115.75 Now #10, (Best prior run: 6.973/198.36 Was #10)
Right Lane: Steve Schmidt Runs 6.986/197.41 Now #16, (Best prior run: 6.986/197.28 Was #16)

Schmidt fails to move off the bump, and the tricky traction has foiled the efforts of several of the top runners, so he may be able to hang on.

Left Lane: Dester Cambron Runs 7.078/191.97 Now #17, (Best prior run: 6.993/197.41 Was #17)
Right Lane: Warren Johnson Runs 6.878/200.84 Now # 1, (Best prior run: 6.892/201.20 Was # 1)

WJ gets within 0.005 of the 6.873 national record, here, and raises the bar yet again.

Left Lane: Bruce Allen Runs 7.023/196.76 Now #21, (Best prior run: 7.106/195.31 Was #26)
Right Lane: Ray Franks Runs 7.004/196.29 Now #19, (Best prior run: 7.008/197.45 Was #19)

No joy for the hometown heroes, the Reher and Morrison Pontiac still on the outside of the show.

Left Lane: Taylor Lastor Runs 12.415/ 68.08 Now #29, (Best prior run: 10.536/ 85.29 Was #29)
Right Lane: Troy Coughlin Runs 6.953/198.50 Now # 9, (Best prior run: 7.041/197.62 Was #23)

Coughlin moves in to the show and bumps Schmidt, moving Rickie Smith onto the bubble.

Left Lane: Brad Klein Runs 9.625/ 95.87 Now #29, (No prior time)
Right Lane: George Marnell Runs 6.935/197.06 Now # 8, (Best prior run: 7.206/160.34 Was #27)

And there goes Rickie, out of the show just that quick. Now V. Gaines is on the bubble, at 6.981 .

Left Lane: Jim Yates Runs 6.908/198.36 Now # 5, (Best prior run: 6.930/198.71 Was # 7)
Right Lane: Robert Patrick Runs 6.957/198.54 Now #12, (Best prior run: 7.004/197.49 Was #20)

The Ford makes the show, bumping Gaines, and now Ron Krisher is on the hot seat with his 6.981.

Left Lane: Greg Anderson Runs 6.960/198.41 Now #13, (Best prior run: 7.022/197.41 Was #22)
Right Lane: Kurt Johnson Runs 9.719/ 94.46 Now # 7, (Best prior run: 6.927/199.46 Was # 7)

Good pass for Greg Anderson, who has worked hard to get Troy Humphrey's Firebird sorted out after leaving WJ's camp.

Right Lane: Allen Johnson Runs 7.069/197.45 Now #27, (Best prior run: 7.093/194.93 Was #27)

Allen Johnson is running one of Dale Eicke's engines this weekend, and he ran thru the clutch pretty good in the first round. And from the sound of the engine, that's exactly what happened again here tonight. So that's the final car, and after two rounds, it's WJ on the pole and Mike Edwards' 6.978 on the bubble.
