ENNIS, Texas - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Competition Eliminator at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, 30th annual AAA Texas NHRA FallNationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, amount over/under index, and position in order following run, class and class index:

Left Lane: Scott Benham Runs 8.640/161.85/-0.260, Now #2 B/T Index: 8.90
Right Lane: Mitch Withers Runs 6.740/205.57/-0.330, Now #1 A/A Index: 7.07

4:16 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 94 degrees, relative humidity 27 percent, barometer 29.43 inches, adjusted altitude 3,387 feet.

Benham had a traction problem at the hit but recovered quickly.

Right Lane: Dennis Smiley No Time, Now #4 B/ED Index: 7.45

Smiley left before the tree was activated and received no time.

Left Lane: Michael Compton Runs 8.592/159.78/-0.408, Now #3 E/SM Index: 9.00
Right Lane: Russell Joly Runs 7.350/185.36/-0.520, Now #1 C/AA Index: 7.87

Joly makes a good pass for the conditions and takes the early pole.

Left Lane: Ray Goodman Runs 7.524/175.59/-0.296, Now #5 A/EA Index: 7.82
Right Lane: Duane Robison Runs 8.011/131.32/0.151, Now #7 C/A Index: 7.86

Robison had problems late in the run and was off the throttle early. Goodman makes a clean pass and gets in the fifth spot for now.

Left Lane: Clint Neff Runs 7.573/172.54/-0.667, Now #1 K/AA Index: 8.24
Right Lane: Greg Porter Runs 9.263/115.28/0.383, Now #9 D/SMA Index: 8.88

Neff makes an impressive pass for the conditions and takes the top spot for now. Porter slowed near the end of the run.

Left Lane: Dick Maris Runs 6.987/192.71/-0.543, Now #3 C/DA Index: 7.53
Right Lane: Kevin Self Runs 7.791/169.10/-0.589, Now #2 F/EA Index: 8.38

Self and Maris both with decent passes to get in the field.

Left Lane: Keith Mawhee Runs 7.766/175.87/-0.484, Now #6 D/A Index: 8.25
Right Lane: Clark Smiley Runs 7.270/188.65/-0.590, Now #2 BB/A Index: 7.86

Smiley makes a clean pass and gets in the second spot for now.

Left Lane: Clint Sallee Runs 6.644/206.01/-0.536, Now #6 B/D Index: 7.18
Right Lane: Craig Bourgeois Runs 6.855/181.20/-0.665, Now #2 B/ND Index: 7.52

Bourgeois was moving around early in the run but makes a good pass and ges in the second spot for now.

Right Lane: Keith Hall Runs 8.487/164.71/-0.513, Now #8 E/SM Index: 9.00

Alexander has problems early and is off the throttle before he reaches the 330 foot marker. Hall makes a clean pass and gets in the eighth spot for now.

Right Lane: Donald Thomas Runs 6.748/196.33/-0.612, Now #3 C/ED Index: 7.36

Left Lane: David Rampy Runs 7.391/155.63/-0.429, Now #13 A/EA Index: 7.82
Right Lane: Doug Warren Runs 6.565/208.49/-0.505, Now #10 A/DA Index: 7.07

Rampy makes a decent pass and gets in the middle of the field.

Right Lane: Bruno Massel Runs 6.979/193.90/-0.641, Now #3 DD/AT Index: 7.62

Massel goes right down the groove and moves into the third spot to end this session.
