Competition Eliminator Qualifying Notes, Session #1
By David Gerard

POMONA, Calif. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Competition Eliminator at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, 50th annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, amount over/under index, and position in order following run, class and class index:
Left Lane: Gary Ross Runs 7.184/154.58/0.094, Now #2 A/AA Index: 7.09
Right Lane: Ross Wilson Runs 8.194/166.54/-0.556, Now #1 C/SM Index: 8.75

12:03 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 71 degrees, relative humidity 49 percent, barometer 28.96 inches, adjusted altitude 2,502 feet, track temperature 84 degrees.

The clouds have started to drift in, so the track temperature is great!

Two good launches to start the session and Wilson gets a representative time to tune to.

Ross left hard and then clicked it early down track.

Left Lane: John Mihovetz Runs 6.107/241.93/-0.713, Now #1 BB/AT Index: 6.82
Right Lane: John Keilers Runs 6.938/204.23/-0.162, Now #3 A/DA Index: 7.10

Mihovetz is running AA/AT this week, after running over one second under the BB/AT index three times at Las Vegas last weekend. He makes another strong pass today and sets the mark fro the rest of the field with "only" a seventy plus under pass.

Strong leave for Keilers and he dumps early too.

Left Lane: John Edwards No Time, Now #6 C/AA Index: 7.87
Right Lane: Jeff Lane Runs 7.975/160.90/-0.585, Now #2 B/SMA Index: 8.56

Edwards has issues getting the Neon running and Lane makes a clean to the number two spot.

Left Lane: Ed Sigmon Runs 8.594/137.89/-0.396, Now #4 C/SR Index: 8.99
Right Lane: Tyler Hogan No Time, Now #8 C/DA Index: 7.54

Hogan has issues after the burnout and has to be pushed back.

Sigmon's Chevy makes a hard move right off the line and he stays with it to get a number on the sheets.

Left Lane: Jim Greenheck Runs 7.289/186.48/-0.581, Now #3 C/AA Index: 7.87
Right Lane: Dean Carter Runs 11.991/101.29/4.431, Now #8 B/ND Index: 7.56

Lots of shake off the line for Carter and he wisely gives it up.

Clean pass for Greenheck into the new #3 spot.

Left Lane: Ray Skillman Runs 8.310/162.57/-0.600, Now #2 E/SMA Index: 8.91
Right Lane: Ralph Van Paepeghem Runs 7.288/180.62/-0.532, Now #6 A/EA Index: 7.82

Great pass for Skillman to run exactly sixty under and take over the #2 spot for now.

Van Paepeghem launches with a strong 1.012 sixty foot time and has a clean pass.

Left Lane: Mark Lelchook Runs 7.378/177.60/-0.542, Now #7 D/ED Index: 7.92
Right Lane: Aaron Strong Runs 8.138/164.91/-0.562, Now #5 B/T Index: 8.70

Clean and straight for both cars.

Left Lane: Ryan Warter Runs 8.664/155.72/-0.566, Now #6 F/SM Index: 9.23
Right Lane: Clint Neff Runs 7.617/172.19/-0.633, Now #2 K/AA Index: 8.25

Wheel up leave for Warter and a strong pass into the #6 spot.

Good news and bad news for Neff. After a strong leave and a clean pass into the number two spot, the little Bantam can't stop and plows into the Kitty Litter at the end of the track. He almost got it stopped and just nosed into the sand. The Safety Safari guys push him back out and we are right back to racing.

Left Lane: Scott Hedlund Runs 7.782/173.99/-0.568, Now #6 A/SM Index: 8.35
Right Lane: Adam Bowdish Runs 9.894/102.41/1.284, Now #15 C/SMA Index: 8.61

Wild wheel up leave for Bowdish and the Cobalt drives hard towards the guard rail. He wisely gets out of it quickly and coasts on down.

Hedlund had the wheels up too, but keep his Cobalt straight to take over #6.

Left Lane: Alan Ellis Runs 6.621/203.74/-0.529, Now #12 A/AP Index: 7.15
Right Lane: Joe Mozeris Runs 7.064/189.15/-0.406, Now #13 B/ED Index: 7.47

Both cars can run better, but get some number to tune to later.

Left Lane: Tom Mettler Runs 7.451/182.90/-0.519, Now #14 PST Index: 7.97
Right Lane: David Rampy Runs 7.283/180.91/-0.537, Now #11 A/EA Index: 7.82

Rampy is your 2014 Competition Eliminator Champion, after his performance at Las Vegas last weekend. He nails the tree with a stellar 0.001 light and runs clean into the middle of the field.

Mettler just goes red and chases Rampy to the finish line.

Left Lane: Tony Mandella Runs 8.563/142.40/-0.377, Now #18 C/TA Index: 8.94
Right Lane: Dan Fletcher Runs 8.115/148.46/-0.485, Now #15 C/EA Index: 8.60

Two clean passes right on down the track.

Left Lane: Doug Lambeck Runs 19.657/53.24/10.767, Now #23 D/SMA Index: 8.89

Lambeck will wrap up session one of Comp. The RPM's went sky high at the green and didn't move. He sat in the light for a couple of seconds and tried again, but the car would only lug off the line and down the track. Odd!

12:25 p.m. Mihovetz is number one at -0.7i3 under and the field not filled, no bump spot.
