Richardson, Damron Lead Winners at Season Opener

The NHRA Southeast Division Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series kicked off the 2014 season at Orlando Speed World Dragway with eleven drivers taking home wins led by Scott Richardson and Kurt Damron in Comp Eliminator and the Hickory Enclosed Trailers Top Dragster respectively.

Richardson, Corbin, Ky., drove his '14 Cobalt to the win over Scott Benham in 8.707 seconds while local driver Damron of Fruitland Park, Fla., held off Casey Spradlin, Ranburne, Ala., with a lap of 7.689 seconds at 163.65 mph.

Joining Damron in the winner's circle from the home state was Scot Lamar, Hawthorne, Fla., who ran strong all day including a final round win over Greg Samuel in Super Comp.

Tyler Caheely and Jeff Hairrington both turned good starts into wins as Caheely, Rock Spring, Ga., used a .007 reaction time to beat Mike Crutchfield , Montgomery, Ala., by about 3 feet in Super Stock. Hairrington, Kathleen, Ga., won on a holeshot over Jeff Adkinson, Damascus, Ga., in Stock with his '13 Ford and a lap of 10.136 at 127 mph.

The Davis Golf Cart Top Sportsman trophy went to Frederick Perkins, Plainville, Conn., who put the defending division champion Jeffrey Barker on the trailer with a run of 7.578 seconds at 180.26 mph in his '69 Nova.

Steven Furr and Chris Depascale were tops in Super Gas and Super Street with Furr, Harrisburg, N.C., winning easy over Joe DeLuco , Seffner, Fla., and Depascale upending Greg Brannon in the Super Street final that was close at the start but saw Depascale pull away and cross the finish line first in 10.907 seconds on the 10.90 index.

In the Southeast Division index classes it was Mike Ruff of Orlando, Fla., beating Eddie Brooks in 10.00; Brendan George, Gainesville, Fla., took out Jack Aspinwall in 11.00; and Buddy Goolsby, Gainesville, Fla., won over Danny Towe in 12.00.

Southeast Division racers head to South Georgia Motorsports Park for their next NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event, March 7-9 before meeting up with the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series for the Amalie Oil NHRA Gatornationals at Auto Plus Raceway at Gainesville, March 13-16.

Jeff Hairrington, Kathleen, Ga., '13 Ford, B/SA, 10.136, 127.02 def. Jeff Adkinson, Damascus, Ga., '69 Camaro, B/SA, 10.135, 129.72.

Scot LaMar, Hawthorne, Fla., dragster, 8.933, 169.70 def. Greg Samuel, Deleon Springs, Fla., dragster, 8.880, 168.68.

Steven Furr, Harrisburg, N.C., '68 Camaro, 10.202, 129.49 def. Joe DeLuco, Seffner, Fla., '67 Chevy II, 10.564, 120.82.
