Can Anyone Stop Brock Moshier?

MOHNTON, Pa. - Perhaps Maple Grove Raceway should just paint a permanent parking space for Brock Moshier in PPC Lubricants Victory Lane; the drag racer from Lititz, Pa., seems to be coming back there after just about every race at The Grove this season.

He and his 1971 Vega wagon did it once again Saturday. Moshier won his third Ciccarone Racing Products Pro E.T. Class race of the season and 10th race overall in 2013. In the Victory Lane photo, Moshier and his pit crew happily put up both of their hands in a "10" sign.

And just think, the Sunoco Race Fuels Money Trail season has just passed the halfway point. The 85 points put Moshier over 400 for the season and 65 ahead of his nearest competitor, teammate Martin Flegal.

Besides Maple Grove, Moshier has also won at other regional tracks this spring, including Atco, Cecil County and Numidia.

This time around, he beat Paul Thimm Jr. (Mohnton, Pa.), the defending season champion and a racer who knows something about dominating the Pro class.

In a head's up final - both drivers dialed at 9.02 seconds - Thimm and his '27 Roadster got a quicker start off the line, but he broke out at 8.994 seconds at 144.75 mph. It still would've been tough to beat Moshier, who hit the 9.02 seconds on the dot with a speed of 141.25.

Moshier got into the final after a bye in the semifinals. He advanced from the quarterfinals when Jeff Weitzel (Blandon, Pa.) fouled at the start. Thimm defeated Gary Simpers (North East, Md.) in the semis and Danny Cloer (Telford, Pa.) in the quarters by getting closer to his dial-in.

In Goldrush Trailers Super, Brad Groff (Christiana, Pa.) and his Ken's Kustom dragster won his first-ever race at Maple Grove. He clinched the win in the final when Simpers - who was contending in two classes in his '64 Comet - broke out by .012 seconds. Groff ran 8.256 at 155.52 that was ..016 over.

Groff had still competition moving up the ladder, but got a break when Nick Lewis (Northampton, Pa.), broke out in the quarterfinals. He then beat Lanny Werley (Leesport, Pa.) in the semis with a dead-on run of 8.240 at 155.90. Simpers got the jump on Fran DiCicco (Havertown, Pa.) in the quarters and then outran Richard Rogge (East Norriton, Pa.) in the semis.

Michael VanDenHeuvel (Elkton, Md.) grabbed his first win of the season in P.C. Richard & Son Street. He had an easy final run as runner-up Adam Werner (Reading, Pa.) fouled at the start.

VanDenHeuvel and his '84 Olds Cutlass defeated Jed Knarr (Pottstown, Pa.) in the quarterfinals with pass of 12.165 at 106.76, then took down Russ Picone (Martins Creek, Pa.) in the semis by going 11.527 at 109.32. Werner used better reaction times to beat Jake Knarr (Boyertown, Pa.) in the quarters and his father, Paul (Sinking Spring, Pa.) in the semis.

Gene Saylor (York, Pa.) also had his first win of the season in Ray's Yamaha Top Bike. Riding a '79 Kawasaki, Saylor got a great reaction time in the final against Keith Alesin (Mohnton, Pa.) and followed through with a pass of 8.736 at 134.44.

Saylor was almost pinpoint perfect with his dial-ins. In the quarters he was .001 over to beat Wayne Pyfrom (Denver, Pa.) and was .003 over in the semis against Cory Stuebner (Hamburg, Pa.). Meanwhile, Alesin used reaction times to defeat Andy Dempsey (Narvon, Pa.) and Kyle Gockley (Mohnton, Pa.).

Kyle Robb (Denver, Pa.) is certainly making things interesting in the Junior Dragster season points. With his win Saturday, he moved to within 12 points of leader Vincent Branca (Norristown, Pa.).

Robb won the final when Caleb Holley (Carlisle, Pa.) fouled at the start. His journey to the final included a quarterfinal win over Katelyn Kershner (New Tripoli, Pa.) and beating C.J. Ketterer (Sellersville, Pa.) in the semis. Holley beat Matthew Witkowski (Elverson, Pa.) and Branca to advance.

Bill Johnson (Hatboro, Pa.) won Trophy in a '13 Camaro. He defeated Bob Keffer (Mohnton, Pa.) in the final with a pass of 12.747 at 113.59.

Racing returns to Maple Grove next weekend with the Mega Mopar Action Series.
