COMMERCE, Ga. - Results of round 1 eliminations in Pro Stock at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 23rd annual Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals presented by Pontiac: Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-----Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT----ET---Speed 387 Mark Pawuk 8 Allen Johnson E1 ****WINNER**** 0.026 6.862 200.92 0.039 8.384 114.28 Qualified: #9 6.858 201.22 #8 6.858 201.3411:58 AM Current weather conditions: 73 degrees, 64 percent relative humidity, the barometer 30.09 inches, with a track temperature of 103 degrees under sunny skies. This is the
ninth time AJ and "Cowboy" have raced each other, Pawuk holding a 5-3 edge in those events.
Pawuk left first, Johnson made it up by 60 feet, then Johnson's engine or driveline went away
and Pawuk won easily. The Safety Safari picked up a bunch of small pieces of debris in
Johnson's lane, so whatever broke left lots of tiny aluminum pieces on the track. Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-----Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT----ET---Speed 50 Bruce Allen 2 Jim Yates E1 ****WINNER**** 0.031 6.839 200.83 0.036 6.843 201.34 Qualified: #10 6.860 200.71 #7 6.850 201.10This is the 15th time Yates and Allen have squared off in eliminations, Yates holding a 9-5 advantage in those prior contests. They left almost together, and then were welded together all the way down the track. Bruce Allen's incremental margins: 60ft(0.011), 330 ft(0.011), 660ft(0.010), 1,000ft(0.009). MOV: 0.0092 seconds (approximately 3 feet). Great race! Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-----Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT----ET---Speed 219 Terry Adams 4 Warren Johnson E1 -0.004 6.847 202.12 ****WINNER**** 0.016 6.831 202.45 Qualified: #11 6.863 201.31 #6 6.849 201.82"The Professor" against a relative youngster, WJ 3-1 against Adams in their combined careers. This week, WJ is on the other side of a red light, Adams just four thousandths from perfect, the wrong way. Both drivers made their best laps of the weekend, but only Johnson's counts. Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-----Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT----ET---Speed 11 Scott Geoffrion 402 Taylor Lastor E1 0.039 6.901 198.55 ****WINNER**** 0.011 6.847 201.58 Qualified: #12 6.863 200.83 #5 6.847 200.77This is the first time Geoffrion and Lastor have squared off, both drivers noted for beating their opponents with holeshot starts. Ford vs Chevy. Neither wanted to stage first, Lastor breaking the deadlock after 20 seconds or so. He was away first with a great light and that was all he needed to put the Escort in the trailer. Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-----Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT----ET---Speed 701 Ben Watson 7 Mike Edwards E1 ****WINNER**** 0.028 6.882 200.59 0.062 6.871 200.77 Qualified: #13 6.868 199.67 #4 6.846 200.95This is the first time Watson and Edwards have raced each other, which is no surprise because this is only the second time Watson has qualified in the "sweet sixteen" for Sunday's eliminations. In his other appearance on Sunday, he beat Ron Krisher in the first round. He's two-for-two in first round appearances, putting na holeshot on Edwards and then making it stick. Ben Watson's incremental margins: 60ft(0.027), 330 ft(0.022), 660ft(0.021), 1,000ft(0.022). MOV: 0.0234 seconds (approximately 7 feet). Watson faces Lastor next round, Lastor with lane choice. Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-----Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT----ET---Speed 398 Darrell Alderman 6 Kurt Johnson E1 0.025 6.853 201.88 ****WINNER**** 0.026 6.825 202.94 Qualified: #14 6.870 200.74 #3 6.840 202.67This is a great matchup, Alderman and KJ meeting for the 16th time in their careers. Alderman was victorious nine times, Johnson six. Chevy versus Mopar, KJ with the apparent power advantage and Alderman noted for leaving on his opponents (and the occasional starting line burndown). They were dead-even off the starting line, with no games, and then KJ steadily opened the gap for the win. Kurt Johnson's incremental margins: 60ft(0.012), 330 ft(0.013), 660ft(0.018), 1,000ft(0.023). MOV: 0.0271 seconds (approximately 8 feet). He faces his dad in round two, KJ with lane choice. Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-----Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT----ET---Speed 10 Mark Whisnant 3 Greg Anderson E1 -0.021 8.693 110.65 ****WINNER**** 0.040 6.815 203.06 Qualified: #16 6.872 199.70 #1 6.821 203.00Anderson and Whisnant have only raced each other once before, Anderson taking the win at Reading last year. Make it 2-0 for Anderson, running low ET and top speed of the weekend against Whisnant's red light, resetting the track speed record and just missing a track elapsed time record. Anderson has lane choice against Pawuk in round two. Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-----Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT----ET---Speed 445 Greg Stanfield 1 Jeg Coughlin E1 0.006 6.894 200.80 ****WINNER**** 0.024 6.829 201.37 Qualified: #15 6.870 200.38 #2 6.822 201.04Stanfield was 0-1 against Jeg, their only prior meeting coming in the first round at Indy last year. Neither wanted to stage first, Jeg finally going in first after a half-minute or so. Stanfield sawed the tree down, but Jeg had the horsepower to run him down in the first 60 feet and then run away the win. Coughlin has lane choice against Allen in round two. Jeg Coughlin's incremental margins: 60ft(0.008), 330 ft(0.025), 660ft(0.036), 1,000ft(0.044). MOV: 0.0477 seconds (approximately 14 feet).
