POMONA, Calif. - Notes from final, round 2 qualifying in Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 48th annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Keeter Ray Runs 5.642/255.82, Now #7; Best prior run: 8.139/110.14, Was #18
Right Lane: Mark Woznichak Runs 6.766/203.68, Now #17; Best prior run: 7.305/165.15, Was #17

4:17 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 63 degrees, relative humidity 41 percent, barometer 28.74 inches, adjusted altitude 2,066 feet, track temperature 67 degrees.

Annie Whiteley is on the bump spot at 7.099.

Ray gets the pass that he has been looking for. Goodwin gets a handle on the starting line and the Monte Carlo runs straight and true into the top half of the field. ...and he had a 0.009 light on top of that!

Woznichak is still struggling off the line and lifts.

Left Lane: Annie Whiteley Runs 11.493/72.09, Now #18; Best prior run: 7.099/183.52, Was #18
Right Lane: Sean Bellemeur Runs 5.787/253.85, Now #12; Best prior run: 5.868/254.28, Was #14

Whiteley can't get a handle on the starting line and won't make the field.

Bellemeur makes another strong and clean pass and moves up the ladder two spots.

Sean Bellemeur's incremental times: 60ft-0.979 sec., 330ft-2.615, 660ft-3.853/201.43 mph, 1,000ft-4.902.

Left Lane: Ross Stickler Runs 13.498/58.14, Now #16; Best prior run: 6.110/233.52, Was #16
Right Lane: Bernie Harrington Runs 13.454/66.90, Now #13; Best prior run: 5.793/229.31, Was #13

Ross Stickler is on the bump spot at 6.110 and will stay there, as Harrington spins the tires hard at the green, quickly followed by Strickler.

Left Lane: Kris Hool Runs 6.251/200.56, Now #15; Best prior run: 5.983/234.53, Was #15
Right Lane: Mickey Ferro Runs 5.808/249.63, Now #11; Best prior run: 5.676/255.00, Was #11

Both cars are all over the track trying to come to grips with the cool track.

Hool is in and out of the throttle and slows.

Ferro snakes his way to the finish line, slowing from earlier.

Left Lane: Johann Wernhart Runs 8.098/88.47, Now #14; Best prior run: 5.803/209.92, Was #14
Right Lane: Jay Payne Runs 5.654/252.33, Now #6; Best prior run: 5.626/259.06, Was #6

Wernhart gets out to the 330 lights and engine goes bang.

Payne makes a clean pass, running close to his prior best and will stay #6 for now.

Jay Payne's incremental times: 60ft-0.957 sec., 330ft-2.534, 660ft-3.748/205.19 mph, 1,000ft-4.779.

4:28 PM There is a lot of oil on the track in the left lane and the clean up may take a while.

Right Lane: Jirka Kaplan No Time, Now #5; Best prior run: 5.608/256.94, Was #4

4:43 p.m. Back to qualifying.

Kaplan's engine doesn't soud well in the burnout and then just quits when he tries to launch the car. It stops on the track right after the 60 foot lights.

Gasparrelli pulls a rabbit out of his hat and powers down the track into the new #2 spot on the ladder. Almost a season best time and speed.

Steve Gasparrelli's incremental times: 60ft-0.953 sec., 330ft-2.494, 660ft-3.692/206.61 mph, 1,000ft-4.712.

Left Lane: Jason Rupert Runs 5.627/255.43, Now #8; Best prior run: 5.661/256.06, Was #10
Right Lane: Shane Westerfield Runs 7.963/114.56, Now #4; Best prior run: 5.605/258.22, Was #4

The track temperature is done to 63 degrees.

Westerfield got a big advantage off the line, but the car drives towards the center line and he lifts d pulls it back just before crossing it.

Rupert makes another strong pass and moves up into the top half of the field.

Jason Rupert's incremental times: 60ft-0.939 sec., 330ft-2.495, 660ft-3.711/203.49 mph, 1,000ft-4.748.

Left Lane: Tony Bartone Runs 8.929/97.19, Now #10; Best prior run: 5.655/261.07, Was #10
Right Lane: Doug Gordon Runs 5.600/258.86, Now #3; Best prior run: 5.584/259.66, Was #3

They leave close together with only 0.001 difference at 60 feet. Bartone shakes the tires and spins right after that.

Gordon shows his power again with a strong pass to the finish line. He will stay #3.

Doug Gordon's incremental times: 60ft-0.947 sec., 330ft-2.498, 660ft-3.706/205.44 mph, 1,000ft-4.731.

Left Lane: Clint Thompson Runs 9.938/87.15, Now #6; Best prior run: 5.610/253.56, Was #6
Right Lane: John Lombardo Jr. Runs 5.506/261.02, Now #1; Best prior run: 5.514/261.42, Was #1

They leave within 0.002 of each other and Thompson is in trouble right away. The car powers towards the center line and is done before the 330 foot lights.

Lombardo is strong and starts with a terrific 0.926 sixty foot time and thunders on down the track, moving the top spot even further away from the field.

John Lombardo Jr.'s incremental times: 60ft-0.926 sec., 330ft-2.435, 660ft-3.628/207.15 mph, 1,000ft-4.645.

4:56 p.m. Ross Stickler is on the bump spot at 6.110.
