ENGLISHTOWN, N.J. --

Greg Anderson
Greg Anderson's Pontiac SC/T Grand Am ran the fastest speed in NHRA history during the first and only qualifying session today at the K & N Supernationals. In a day cut short by rain, Anderson took the No. 1 qualifying position and set both ends of the Old Bridge track record with a run of 6.723 seconds (career best) at 205.91 MPH. Anderson needs to run within one percent (203.86) of his top speed either tomorrow or Sunday to establish a new national record.

"It's certainly exciting to drive this Pontiac when the weather conditions are like this," said Anderson. "We didn't quite get it all, there's certainly more left in this Grand Am, but it was a good lap - just to get through the goalposts in conditions like this is going to be pretty good. I still think, whether it's Warren (Johnson), Kurt (Johnson), maybe Jeggie (Coughlin), maybe Krisher, or myself, somebody is going to run a 6.69 or a 6.70 tomorrow. I need to make that happen. Someone's going to do it, someone's going to get the record and the 20 extra bonus points, and we need to make sure we get it done.

"It's hard to make a smooth run in the car when the atmospheric conditions get this good. It's only on rare occasions when we have an opportunity to run in air like this, and we just don't have enough data to make the right calls. We're all taking a swing at a big fat pitch, but you can't go up there running in an adjusted altitude of 400 feet below sea level with the same setup you used two weeks ago in 2000 feet of air - that won't work. You make a bunch of changes and if you're lucky, you hit it just right."
