7:50 p.m. Buckner was first off the line, but the V-10 Dodge ran down the V-8 Dodge and won by more than a car length.

Blown Mustang versus normally-aspirated V-10 Dodge. Helms had the edge at the tree, but Butner's Mustang had the "ponies" to run him down by 330 feet. Butner should get a scheduled bye, but the racers insisted on a "break rule" than may find him facing the quickest first-round loser, and that would be Helms again. Bo Butner's incremental margins (negative if behind): 60ft(-0.043), 330 ft(0.001). MOV: 0.0607 seconds (approximately 10 feet).

Holbrook has the quickest car here and will race Teuton in the semifinals. Prior to the event, estimates of what these cars would run were "about six seconds." Didin't take long to find out that was wrong.
