POMONA, Calif. - Peter Biondo wrapped up the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series National Championship in Super Gas in the first round of eliminations Friday at the 47th annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals.

Biondo faced challenger Mike Sawyer in the first round and won on a double-breakout, Biondo's 0.010 second reaction time and 9.885 second ET was closer to the Super Gas 9.90 index than Sawyer's 0.018 reaction and 9.869 ET.

Had Sawyer prevailed, he would have had to advance to the final round to overcome Biondo's lead in the points and take the championship.
