Top Fuel Time Trial Notes, Session #1
By Larry Sullivan

CLERMONT, Ind. - Notes from round 1 time trials in Top Fuel at the NHRA, Indianapolis Test Session Day 2 listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Left Lane: Joe Hartley Runs 7.633/0.00, Now #1

9:28 a.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 73 degrees, relative humidity 73 percent, barometer 29.21 inches, adjusted altitude 2,572 feet, track temperature 85 degrees.

Important Note For Wednesday Fuel Testing Reports: The track is not recabled for 1,000 feet today, so there is no 1,000-foot speed and the finish line numbers on the scoreboards and in the data we receive from the timing system are coming from the 1/4-mile speed trap. We are editing the run data to give you the 1,000-foot times, but have no way to come up with the 1,000-foot speeds, so they will be shown as zero for all runs.

Hartley was the second car of the day, the first Top Fueler. He is in a very tight race with Clay Millican for the final spot in the Countdown, just three points back.

Hartley left hard, then started chattering the tires and lifted. Joe Hartley's incremental times: 60ft-0.844 sec., 330ft-2.709, 660ft-5.168/091.60 mph.

Left Lane: Del Cox Jr Runs 4.143/0.00, Now #1

9:48 a.m. This is Mitch King's car, with competition number 727 on the wing. I have been told that it is Del Cox Jr. in the seat. I have also been told that it may not be Cox, but a new driver, working on his license. I'll find out next time the car comes up. Paul Smith is doing the tuning.

Del Cox Jr's incremental times: 60ft-0.913 sec., 330ft-2.325, 660ft-3.311/258.47 mph.

Left Lane: Cory McClenathan Runs 4.160/0.00, Now #2

9:52 a.m. This run looked good, with a shutoff around the 660-foot mark. Cory McClenathan's incremental times: 60ft-0.833 sec., 330ft-2.150, 660ft-3.099/245.14 mph.

Left Lane: Morgan Lucas Runs 3.970/0.00, Now #1

9:58 a.m. Lucas made a fine-looking run, with an early shutoff, popping the wheels up nicely and carrying them about 200 feet. Morgan Lucas' incremental times: 60ft-0.837 sec., 330ft-2.152, 660ft-3.077/274.50 mph.

Left Lane: Shawn Langdon Runs 3.905/0.00, Now #1

10:05 a.m. A nice-looking run, looked like a full pass. Shawn Langdon's incremental times: 60ft-0.845 sec., 330ft-2.185, 660ft-3.126/271.84 mph.

Left Lane: Spencer Massey Runs 3.879/0.00, Now #1

Left Lane: Clay Millican Runs 3.950/0.00, Now #3

10:18 a.m. Millican need to go rounds to stay ahead of Hartley. This was a nice-looking run, with an early shutoff, of course. Clay Millican's incremental times: 60ft-0.862 sec., 330ft-2.191, 660ft-3.145/263.36 mph.

Left Lane: Tony Schumacher Runs 3.833/0.00, Now #1

10:31 a.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 75 degrees, relative humidity 68 percent, barometer 29.21 inches, adjusted altitude 2,687 feet, track temperature 95 degrees.

Tony Schumacher's incremental times: 60ft-0.830 sec., 330ft-2.137, 660ft-3.056/275.67 mph.

Left Lane: Doug Kalitta Runs 4.413/0.00, Now #9

10:47 a.m. Doug's car apparently left some "stuff" on the lane and we will be down for a cleanup, so we'll call this the end of round 1. Doug Kalitta's incremental times: 60ft-0.903 sec., 330ft-2.292, 660ft-3.319/233.68 mph.
