Pro Stock Motorcycle Time Trial Notes, Session #2
By Larry Sullivan

CLERMONT, Ind. - Notes from round 2 time trials in Pro Stock Motorcycle at the NHRA, Indianapolis Test Session Day 1 listing lane, rider name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Chip Ellis Runs 7.469/147.28, Now #3; No Prior Run

12:52 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 78 degrees, relative humidity 54 percent, barometer 29.24 inches, adjusted altitude 2,726 feet, track temperature 110 degrees.

Matt and Andrew Hines are helping Ellis today, so I am guessing he is running one of their Suzuki engines...Chip Ellis' incremental times: 60ft-1.121 sec., 330ft-3.024, 660ft-4.617/153.60 mph, 1,000ft-6.043, shutting off just past half track.

Left Lane: Matt Smith Runs 7.096/173.54, Now #1; Best prior run: 7.199/156.19, Was #2

1:28 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 78 degrees, relative humidity 54 percent, barometer 29.24 inches, adjusted altitude 2,726 feet, track temperature 110 degrees.

Smith's second run of the day was a good one, again shutting off early. Matt Smith's incremental times: 60ft-1.083 sec., 330ft-2.926, 660ft-4.491/156.15 mph, 1,000ft-5.867.

Left Lane: Chip Ellis Runs 7.331/185.31, Now #3; No Prior Run

2:05 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 81 degrees, relative humidity 48 percent, barometer 29.21 inches, adjusted altitude 2,915 feet, track temperature 123 degrees.

It sounded like Ellis had a lot of tire spin on the launch, and the numbers seem to agree. Chip Ellis' incremental times: 60ft-1.234 sec., 330ft-3.145, 660ft-4.736/154.25 mph, 1,000ft-6.126.

Left Lane: Steve Johnson Runs 7.238/160.94, Now #2; Best prior run: 7.117/186.18, Was #1

2:28 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 81 degrees, relative humidity 48 percent, barometer 29.21 inches, adjusted altitude 2,915 feet, track temperature 123 degrees.

Johnson's bike left hard, with his best 60-foot time yet, but the engine sound wavered in the middle of third gear and his top-end numbers were not as good. Steve Johnson's incremental times: 60ft-1.079 sec., 330ft-2.949, 660ft-4.535/154.32 mph, 1,000ft-5.930. After the run, a track worker checked the left lane in the lights, so Johnson may have hurt the engine on this run.

Left Lane: Matt Smith Runs 7.160/166.23, Now #1; Best prior run: 7.096/173.54, Was #1

2:33 p.m. Smith's early numbers dropped a bit and he shut off early. Matt Smith's incremental times: 60ft-1.085 sec., 330ft-2.939, 660ft-4.510/155.81 mph, 1,000ft-5.885.

With a break in the action, we'll call this the end of "round two."
