By Larry Sullivan

NORWALK, Ohio - Notes from round 3 qualifying in Pro Stock at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, Second annual Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Kurt Johnson Runs 6.794/205.54, Now #3; Best prior run: 6.738/206.04, Was #2
Right Lane: Allen Johnson Runs 6.729/204.69, Now #2; Best prior run: 6.758/204.29, Was #7

1:46 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 82 degrees, relative humidity 63 percent, barometer 28.81 inches, adjusted altitude 3,746 feet, track temperature 111 degrees.

The first two pairs are the K&N Challenge cars.

KJ's car did a little wiggle around 1,000 feet, hurting his time, and AJ took over the #2 spot on a very nice run.

Left Lane: Jeg Coughlin Runs 6.745/204.66, Now #1; Best prior run: 6.726/205.04, Was #1
Right Lane: Greg Anderson Runs 6.748/204.14, Now #6; Best prior run: 6.754/204.88, Was #7

Coughlin l;ost a bit from his first run, Anderson picked up a bit, moved up one spot.

Left Lane: Kevin Lawrence Runs 6.827/201.19, Now #22; Best prior run: 6.857/198.99, Was #25

The remaining cars are making their final qualifying run. Lawrence improved slightly, but won't be here tomorrow.

Left Lane: Ron Krisher Runs 6.732/204.70, Now #3; Best prior run: 6.836/202.88, Was #24

Krisher had a bad first run, in the Challenge, and needed a good one here to get into the field. John Nobile was on the bump spot at 6.785.

Nice run by Krisher with a solid 0.994 60--foot time and moved all the way up to third.

Left Lane: Steve Spiess Runs 6.833/202.73, Now #25; Best prior run: 6.831/202.52, Was #25

Jim Yates was the new occupant of the bump spot at 6.780.

Spiess had a good start, but ran out of steam on the top end and came up short.

Left Lane: Richie Stevens Runs 6.794/202.79, Now #19; Best prior run: 6.817/202.45, Was #22
Right Lane: Lee Zane Runs 7.045/193.65, Now #28; Best prior run: 6.975/196.22, Was #28

Stevens had a shot, with a 0.999 short time, but ran out of "smash" on the top end and Yates stayed on the bubble. Zane made another clean, straight run, obviously down on horsepower based on his speed.

Left Lane: Johnny Gray Runs 6.762/203.92, Now #10; Best prior run: 6.796/203.77, Was #20
Right Lane: Jim Cunningham No Time, Now #27; Best prior run: 6.910/198.99, Was #27

Cunningham flinched, launching way before the tree was activated. Gray kept his cool, waited for the tree, then m ade a nice run to bump Yates from the field.

Left Lane: John Nobile Runs 6.794/203.65, Now #18; Best prior run: 6.785/203.00, Was #18
Right Lane: Max Naylor Runs 6.793/202.36, Now #20; Best prior run: 6.851/201.10, Was #26

Gray's run put Greg Stanfield on the bump spot at 6.779.

Naylor made a much-improved run, but not improved enough. Nobile lost ground from his first pass. Both are through for the weekend.

Left Lane: V. Gaines Runs 6.764/203.58, Now #11; Best prior run: 6.776/203.28, Was #15
Right Lane: Dave Northrop No Time, Now #23; Best prior run: 6.815/203.46, Was #23

Northrop's car stumbled and faltered when he tried to do a burnout and it took a few whacks on the throttle to get it cleared out.

Northrop pre-staged, then went silent. He never lit the second bulb and was timed out. Gaines made a nice solo pass to move well away from the bump spot, then Northrop's silent car was pushed away.

Left Lane: Rickie Jones Runs 6.778/203.19, Now #14; Best prior run: 6.773/202.97, Was #14
Right Lane: Todd Hoerner Runs 6.794/203.09, Now #21; Best prior run: 6.809/203.16, Was #22

Small improvement for Hoerner, but he needed a big improvement. No help for Jones, but he was already in the field.

Left Lane: Vinnie Deceglie Runs 6.754/204.23, Now #9; Best prior run: 6.773/203.92, Was #13
Right Lane: Larry Nance Runs 6.790/203.12, Now #19; Best prior run: 6.791/203.43, Was #19

Nice passes in both lanes, but Deceglie moved up to the top half of the field and Nance came up short of the bump spot.

Left Lane: Justin Humphreys Runs 6.771/203.95, Now #13; Best prior run: 6.771/203.65, Was #13
Right Lane: Jim Yates Runs 7.763/132.37, Now #17; Best prior run: 6.780/203.16, Was #17

Yates' car nosed over just past half track and he failes to get back into the field. Humphreys matched his earlier run almost exactly, running a better speed, but no change in position.

Left Lane: Dave Connolly Runs 6.753/203.89, Now #8; Best prior run: 6.762/204.08, Was #10
Right Lane: Greg Stanfield Runs 6.760/203.89, Now #11; Best prior run: 6.779/203.16, Was #16

Connolly moved up nicely, so did Stanfield, putting Larry Morgan on the bump spot at 6.774. However, there is nobody left to bump him.

Left Lane: Warren Johnson Runs 6.740/206.10, Now #6; Best prior run: 6.754/205.98, Was #9
Right Lane: Larry Morgan Runs 6.739/204.63, Now #5; Best prior run: 6.774/204.17, Was #16

Morgan took care of that bump stuff with a huge run, getting past WJ on the ladder. WJ also improved with a huge speed, top speed of the meet, in fact.

Left Lane: Jason Line Runs 6.716/205.51, Now #1; Best prior run: 6.744/205.10, Was #7
Right Lane: Mike Edwards Runs 6.743/204.14, Now #8; Best prior run: 6.747/204.29, Was #8

Last pair. Two good launches, Line with a 0.991 60-foot time, Edwards a 0.997. Then it was all Line and he went to the top spot, knocking that yellow car off the top spot.
