Top Fuel Time Trial Notes, Session #7
By Larry Sullivan

CHANDLER, Ariz. - Notes from round 7 time trials in Top Fuel at the National Time Trials listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Tony Schumacher Runs 17.781/63.28, Now #1; Best prior run: 4.480/322.04, Was #1

12:17 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 68 degrees, relative humidity 41 percent, barometer 28.79 inches, adjusted altitude 2,341 feet, track temperature 79 degrees.

There was a brief delay while the track crew towed John Force's car off the top end, then Scumacher made a very short burnout.

Schumacher lost traction immediately, the car moving just inches before the tires broke loose.

Tony Schumacher's incremental times: 60ft-1.363 sec., 330ft-5.753, 660ft-10.192/053.50mph, 1,000ft-14.244

Left Lane: Hillary Will No Time, Now #10; Best prior run: 5.108/192.06, Was #10

12:32 p.m. We didn't receive any times on this one - the car left hard, then the rear tires started skipping as they passed the tree.

Left Lane: Bob Vandergriff Runs 10.945/81.16, Now #12; Best prior run: 6.216/133.22, Was #12

12:46 p.m. There seems to be a pattern developing here - Vandergriff launched into tire shake and coasted through.

Bob Vandergriff's incremental times: 60ft-0.862 sec., 330ft-2.807, 660ft-5.462/083.40mph, 1,000ft-8.271.

Left Lane: Larry Dixon Runs 10.107/92.15, Now #6; Best prior run: 4.585/320.20, Was #6

12:59 p.m. Dixon had the same problem - a strong launch followed by tire shake in the first 60 feet.

Larry Dixon's incremental times: 60ft-0.855 sec., 330ft-2.673, 660ft-5.157/088.79mph, 1,000ft-7.730.

Right Lane: Cory McClenathan Runs 12.131/68.01, Now #7; Best prior run: 4.641/266.27, Was #7

1:06 p.m. Ditto for Cory Mac. Solid launch, then tire shake.

Cory McClenathan's incremental times: 60ft-0.858 sec., 330ft-2.989, 660ft-5.828/078.22mph, 1,000ft-8.966.

Right Lane: Rod Fuller Runs 4.538/332.43, Now #2; Best prior run: 4.664/261.12, Was #8

1:24 p.m. Just when it looks like nobody can get down this track, somebody comes along and shows how it's sup[posed to be done. This was an absolutely flawless pass - smooth and straight.

Rod Fuller's incremental times: 60ft-0.853 sec., 330ft-2.172, 660ft-3.098/274.05mph, 1,000ft-3.870.

Right Lane: Doug Kalitta Runs 6.418/126.46, Now #3; Best prior run: 4.545/274.33, Was #3

1:33 p.m. Kalitta's team almost had it right, but his car started shaking the tires before the 330-foot marker and the car kept getting looser and looser until Kalitta finally clicked it off.

Doug Kalitta's incremental times: 60ft-0.856 sec., 330ft-2.185, 660ft-3.368/179.68mph, 1,000ft-4.803.

Right Lane: J.R. Todd Runs 10.041/83.38, Now #5; No Prior Run

1:49 p.m. Hard launch, tire shake, then tire smoke.

Right Lane: Brandon Bernstein Runs 4.559/328.70, Now #5; Best prior run: 5.278/268.17, Was #11

1:55 p.m. Tim & Kim were out here earlier, watching intently and apparently they learned something because this was a good-looking run.

Brandon Bernstein's incremental times: 60ft-0.852 sec., 330ft-2.170, 660ft-3.100/272.72mph, 1,000ft-3.880.

Right Lane: Kevin Poynter Runs 4.726/262.85, Now #17; Best prior run: 11.704/87.37, Was #16

2:01 p.m. Doug Herbert instructed his team to get the car ready for Pomona because he plans to win the championship for the two sons he lost Saturday. Kevin Poynter is filling in for Doug here so they can test the car and be ready for Pomona.

This was a great-looking pass for about 1,100 feet, then the car made a sudden move to the right.

Kevin Poynter's incremental times: 60ft-0.860 sec., 330ft-2.211, 660ft-3.154/268.87mph, 1,000ft-3.945.
