ROCKINGHAM, N.C. - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Torco Nitro Funny Car at the 2007 Knoll-Gas Nitro Jam Drag Racing Series, IHRA World Finals Presented by The U.S. Air Force featuring UTI CHampionship Sunday listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run: Left Lane: Todd Simpson Runs 5.075/284.99, Now #4; Best prior run: 10.172/88.88, Was #9 Right Lane: Mike Smith Runs 5.417/270.10, Now #10; No Prior Run 3:49 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 80 degrees, relative humidity 49 percent, barometer 29.52 inches, adjusted altitude 2,145 feet, track temperature 112 degrees. John Lawson is on the bump spot at 5.223. First pass for Smith and it's expensive with fire out from underneath the body in the lights. Simpson gets his brains rattled with major tire shake from the starting line to about 150 feet off the line. The car drives towards the guard rail until about 400 plus feet out. He stays after it and pulls the car back into the groove to move up five spots on the ladder and into the new #4 spot. Looks like "Stuff" on the top end of the track, so we'll
have a little delay for dusting and cleaning. Left Lane: Terry Haddock Runs 5.181/252.38, Now #7; Best prior run: 5.204/275.73, Was #8 Right Lane: Andy Kelley Runs 5.205/285.41, Now #9; Best prior run: 12.189/89.62, Was #11 4:19 p.m. ..Well, that took a while. Haddock is currently in the field on the bump
spot and Kelly is looking to nudge him out. Both cars improve and Haddock moves off the bump into
the current #7 position. Kelly gets a full pull and misses the bump by only two
hundredths. Right Lane: John Lawson Runs 13.743/77.01, Now #10; Best prior run: 5.223/233.76, Was #10 Mitch King is on the bump spot at 5.183. No joy, as Lawson strikes the tires at the hit and does another smoky burnout across the line. Left Lane: Dale Creasy Jr. Runs 5.033/290.88, Now #3; Best prior run: 5.102/277.43, Was #6 Right Lane: Mitch King Runs 5.068/265.69, Now #5; Best prior run: 5.183/258.96, Was #8 Both cars make strong passes, but King may have lost the blower belt near the traps. They both move up three positions on the ladder. Left Lane: Jeff Diehl Runs 5.256/241.15, Now #7; Best prior run: 5.082/301.07, Was #7 Right Lane: Jack Wyatt Runs 5.095/276.07, Now #4; Best prior run: 5.067/283.19, Was #4 Terry Haddock is back on the bump spot again at 5.181. Wyatt is away first and runs near his prior best, but slows on the top end. Diehl starts to lose cylinders down track and slows too. Left Lane: Bob Gilbertson Runs 4.916/305.91, Now #1; Best prior run: 4.927/302.14, Was #1 Right Lane: Cory Lee Runs 9.393/85.13, Now #2; Best prior run: 4.931/305.22, Was #2 Last pair of the session. Lee has a strong 916 sixty foot and then strikes the tires. Gilbertson runs a even better .907 sixty foot time and makes a strong, straight and clean pass to push the low ET and Fast MPH even further. 4:34 p.m. Terry Haddock is on the bump spot at
5.181.
