POMONA, Calif. - Results of round 1 eliminations in Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 39th annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals:

Opening the show will be the numbers eight and nine qualifiers. This is the quickest field in the history of the class. The Woz uses all of his lane as he tried to cross the centerline twice on his way down, but still gets the win over Lee.

Payne is the only car in the 5.5s this weekend and ended up qualifying #1. Jones made
the show on his last pass yesterday. Big upset!!! Jones was second off the line, but it
was Jones at every other marker down the track. Shawn Jones' MOV: 0.0077 seconds
(approximately 3 feet).

There was a pretty good puff of smoke out of the winning car as he got to the lights.

Marx wasn't late and a .068 is a pretty good light. Weaver's was just better and he gets the holeshot win.

White leaves first and is never headed. He takes the win but when he reached for the parachute release nothing happened. White got the car sideways in the shutoff area with smoke coming off the rear tires. He came to a stop with the front lip of the body just overhanging the edge of the sand and touching nothing. When he got out of the car he appeared to be a little bit hot. That's the exciting conclusion to the first round of Alcohol Funny Car.
