Pro Stock Motorcycle Qualifying Notes, Session #2
By Darryl Jackman

POMONA, Calif. - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Pro Stock Motorcycle at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 42nd annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals listing lane, rider name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Connie Cohen Runs 7.426/168.98, Now #20; No Prior Run

1:20 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 75 degrees, relative humidity 33 percent, barometer 29.12 inches, adjusted altitude 2,171 feet, track temperature 104 degrees.

We've arrived at the Friday Pro qualifying session and as usual it's the Bikes up first. Cohen rolled the lights yesterday and got a rear wheel start. It's something to tune from but not quick enough to qualify.

Left Lane: Freddie Camarena Runs 7.235/181.45, Now #19; Best prior run: 7.250/182.82, Was #19
Right Lane: Scott Lewis Runs 7.149/181.01, Now #15; No Prior Run

Lewis bumps Gann and moves to a very unsafe #15 position. No help for Camarena.

Left Lane: Chris Rivas Runs 7.714/130.47, Now #20; Best prior run: 7.236/180.77, Was #20
Right Lane: Shawn Gann Runs 7.081/188.28, Now #4; Best prior run: 7.179/185.05, Was #17

Gann gets right back in the show in a huge way. He runs a 7.0 in conditions that are not quite as good as Thursday. Rivas still has work.

Left Lane: Matt Smith Runs 7.226/174.23, Now #18; Best prior run: 7.194/181.42, Was #18
Right Lane: Marco Andreano Runs 7.242/182.30, Now #17; Best prior run: 7.162/181.98, Was #17

Real surprise here as neither rider can improve. Gann's run looks really good at the moment.

Left Lane: Tom Bradford Runs 7.265/180.57, Now #15; Best prior run: 7.142/188.62, Was #15
Right Lane: Karen Stoffer Runs 7.174/182.26, Now #14; Best prior run: 7.133/184.47, Was #14

No help for this pair of riders either.

Left Lane: Steve Johnson Runs 7.185/180.33, Now #12; Best prior run: 7.109/187.08, Was #12
Right Lane: Mike Berry No Time, Now #13; Best prior run: 7.118/186.95, Was #13

Again neither rider improves. Berry started the clocks with the rear wheel so his 8.205/108.09 will be DQd.

Left Lane: Ryan Schnitz Runs 7.124/182.87, Now #8; Best prior run: 7.099/185.59, Was #8
Right Lane: Geno Scali Runs 7.116/188.78, Now #11; Best prior run: 7.108/186.51, Was #11

Another pair that just can't muster the suds and improve in the heat of the day.

Left Lane: Michael Phillips Runs 7.158/184.35, Now #7; Best prior run: 7.094/190.11, Was #7
Right Lane: GT Tonglet Runs 7.163/186.54, Now #10; Best prior run: 7.107/185.61, Was #10

Both riders are about a nickel short from Thursday.

Left Lane: Matt Guidera Runs 7.100/184.40, Now #6; Best prior run: 7.087/185.59, Was #6
Right Lane: Antron Brown Runs 7.132/184.04, Now #9; Best prior run: 7.106/184.70, Was #9

Same story for this pair. It's more of the same.

Left Lane: Angelle Sampey Runs 7.113/182.35, Now #3; Best prior run: 7.066/188.07, Was #3
Right Lane: Chip Ellis Runs 7.101/183.07, Now #5; Best prior run: 7.081/183.10, Was #5

What can I say?

Left Lane: Andrew Hines Runs 7.020/190.27, Now #1; Best prior run: 7.020/191.00, Was #1
Right Lane: Craig Treble Runs 7.046/190.35, Now #2; Best prior run: 7.059/189.84, Was #2

Gann had the run of the session up until the final pair here with Hines. Hines absolutely duplicates his Thursday run but loses about 1 mph. We close with Hines #1 and Lewis on the bump. The Championship competitors, Brown and Sampey , are #9 and #3 respectively. On to Pro Stock Automobiles.
