Jack Beckman's win in Pomona was his 31st in the Funny Car class and that ties him with Del Worsham for 8th place all time in the category. He won here three times. He comes into today's eliminations with 732 rounds of racing and a 61% overall win record and 71% in round one. Beckman has won twelve of their eighteen prior round one pairings. Pedregon's Charger is featuring a special 100th Anniversary Snap-On wrap. He is making his 1082nd round of racing with a 52% overall win record and 55% in round one. Beckman is 23 - 17 against Pedregon in prior events. Pedregon gets off the line initially, but is smoking the tires before the 330 lights. Beckman gets just a little further and has to do a
quick pedal slap. He catches the car back up and runs hard to near the finish line. There is a
flash from the pipes and the burst panel is open after that. He is an impressive 13 -2 in the first round at this track. Hight powered to the top spot in session one, but succumbed to shake and spin in his other two attempts. He has already run 895 rounds of eliminations with a 63% win record. 70% in round one matchups. He was one six of the seven round one pairings against Campbell. Campbell made his best pass of the season in session two. This is his 85th round of racing. Hight is away first and then shakes the tires loose about 150 feet out. He tries several times, getting the car way loose and nearly crosses the center line at the 330 lights. Campbell looked to be on a strong pass, but the engine is done early with fire out from under neath the Charger after the 660 lights. No oil, but some spare parts to pick up! He was runner-up to Jack Beckman at the recently completed season opener at Pomona. The sixteen-time Funny Car world champion has more race wins here than any other driver in the nitro categories. Force has made 14 final round appearances with eight wins, including four consecutive victories from 1994 to 1997. He's also qualified No. 1 eight times. Force's number two qualifying position was just 0.003 off of Hagan's pace, with a better speed. John is 24 - 11 in round 1 at this event. He is the only driver to have competed at all 36 Phoenix national events. Haddock only had a single attempt to qualify in session one. He sat out session two and then had the engine just quits on the starting line after a strong burnout in the final session yesterday. This will be Haddock's 112th round of eliminations. Force has dominated Haddock in round one pairing by winning five of their six prior encounters. Force runs all of the number with all of the incrementals and the best ET and speed of the event to take the easy win. When starting from the #1 spot he is 33 -4 in the opening round. Hagan has lead qualifying in the final two sessions. His distinctive looking Blue MOPAR Charger ran the second fastest speed too. This is his 262nd round one race with a 69% win advantage This is Jeff Diehl's first race since Seattle of last year. He only made one qualifying attempt this weekend. This will be his 85th round of racing and his 77th round one. Hagan is 5 - 0 against Diehl in prior events. Hagan gets away first and powers right on down the track to near the finish line, where the Charger drives right into the reflectors to DQ the run and give the win to Diehl. That will cost him five points to add to the injury! Diehl's Camry drops a
couple of cylinders at the hit and he has to lift after the 60 foot lights. He doesn't get a time,
due to Hagan's DQ. His Charger finished in the top four in qualifying this weekend. He has already run 844 rounds of racing with a 52% win record. In his 427 round one pairings, he has a 57% win advantage. He has won all three of his first round matchups against Lee. Lee struggled with traction on all three of his attempts. This will be his 64th round one race and already has 78 rounds of eliminations. We finally get two cars to the finish line under power! Johnson gets a big starting line advantage and steadily pulls further ahead going down the track for the win. He has 380 rounds of racing already with an overall 45% win record. He has won four of the prior five round one races against Alexander. Alexander was only able to made one full pass in session one. The other two attempts were tire smokers. This will be Blake's 80th round on racing with a 44% win record. Tasca III is 4 - 2 against Alexander in prior events. Alexander gets a narrow 0.008 advantage off the line and stay in front to just before the 60 foot light, where the tires shake loose. He tries to pump it it, but can't recover. Tasca has his own issues with shake near the 330 lights.
He does a quick pedal slap and powers on down to the take the win. He gives up lane choice next
round to Johnson. After a two-year hiatus Alexis DeJoria opened the 2020 season in Pomona, advancing to the semifinals. Her first career Funny Car victory came here in 2014. She has won five of the seven round one races against Wilkerson. DeJoria is 6 - 3 against Wilkerson in prior events. Wilkerson gets off the line first and looks to be on a strong pass. He gets to right before the finish line and has his engine go bang! No oil on the track. DeJoria has the tires loose on her Camry early and lifts. Force will have lane choice next round. Ron Capps won here in 2003, 2009 & 2013. He is 16 - 7 in his first round matches at this track. His Charger has a brilliant blue and yellow "chrome" NAPA/PENNZOIL wrap this weekend. This will be his 122nd round of racing with a 61% win record. He has won all four of his prior round one races against Todd. Capps is 8 - 5 against Todd in prior events. Capps gets a big starting line advantage at the green and runs strong to the finish line with his best speed of the meet. He will have lane choice next round over Diehl.
