By Michael L. Jex

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Competition Eliminator at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, 44th annual Amalie Oil NHRA Gatornationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed this round, amount over/under index this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time, speed & over/under Index, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Fred Allen Runs 8.555/156.46/-0.485, Now #26; C/SR Index: 9.04, Prior Best: 8.712/157.95/-0.328, Was #28
Right Lane: Ray Skillman No Time, Now #18; E/SMA Index: 8.99, Prior Best: 8.394/161.09/-0.596, Was #18

10:47 a.m. Skillman broke on the burnout and was pushed back. Allen did a MONSTER wheelstand in his 34 Chevy, he finally lifted and pedaled to bring it back down to earth, and still ran better than he did yesterday. Wow.

We've got a little bit of "stuff" in the burnout area, a quick cleanup is underway.

Left Lane: Bruno Massel Runs 16.089/43.81/8.819, Now #21; I/D Index: 7.27, Prior Best: 6.698/178.28/-0.572, Was #21
Right Lane: Bo Butner Runs 8.362/161.90/-0.628, Now #14; E/SMA Index: 8.99, Prior Best: 8.354/149.45/-0.636, Was #14

Massel's ECOTEC tuneup was a tad too agressive, he spun the tires hard enough to leave a trail of tire smoke before he lifted. Butner ran big speed, but a tic slower than yesterday.

Left Lane: Pat Williams Runs 7.203/203.55/-0.017, Now #29; A/AP Index: 7.22, Prior Best: 6.908/204.08/-0.312, Was #29

Weather conditions: air temperature 65 degrees, relative humidity 28 percent, barometer 30.08 inches, adjusted altitude 561 feet, track temperature 74 degrees.

Martel made a big wiggle to the right off the line, and lifted before the halfway point.

Left Lane: Jeff Adkinson Runs 8.248/161.30/-0.702, Now #5; D/SMA Index: 8.95, Prior Best: 8.371/161.59/-0.579, Was #20
Right Lane: Rodney Rosenstiel Runs 6.576/159.36/-0.434, Now #1; AA/AM Index: 7.01, Prior Best: 6.196/223.65/-0.814, Was #1

THe AAAM National Record holder danced from side-to-side this time, and clicked it about the 1000-foot mark. Nice pass for Adkinson in the other lane, he moves up a bunch. Jeff Adkinson's incremental times: 60ft-1.137 sec., 330ft-3.347, 660ft-5.224/130.58 mph, 1,000ft-6.854.

Wentzel also had some traction issues off the line and lifted. Puckett improves by .008, and moves up a spot.

Left Lane: Greg Kamplain Runs 32.824/52.91/25.304, Now #8; B/ED Index: 7.52, Prior Best: 6.831/182.90/-0.689, Was #8

Bertozzi left a wisp of smoke from the 60-foot till about halfway, the run was clear from that point on. A quick check of the track is done, and it's clear, so we move on to the next pair.

Left Lane: Steve Szupka Runs 8.093/159.04/-0.667, Now #12; G/EA Index: 8.76, Prior Best: 8.108/159.06/-0.652, Was #12
