Top Alcohol Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Final Session

CHANDLER, Ariz. - Notes from final, round 3 qualifying in Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, Pacific Division, event at Firebird International Raceway listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Right Lane: Nick Januik Runs 5.966/245.09, Now #9; Best prior run: 6.009/241.97, Was #9

4:48 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 77 degrees, relative humidity 15 percent, barometer 28.90 inches, adjusted altitude 2,767 feet, track temperature 96 degrees.

Brian Hough is on the bump spot at 5.775. Januik is the only car that can bump Hough out.

Januik moves his career best ET and MPH, but can't push into the field.

Nick Januik's incremental times: 60ft-0.968 sec., 330ft-2.608, 660ft-3.927/188.31 mph, 1,000ft-5.038.

Left Lane: Brian Hough Runs 5.987/198.15, Now #8; Best prior run: 5.775/224.66, Was #8
Right Lane: Terry Ruckman Runs 5.873/254.33, Now #7; Best prior run: 5.727/255.87, Was #7

Hough's car leaves well and then starts to tail wag about 200 feet out. He stays after it for a long while, before finally giving it up. He will stay on the bump and race Bartone [if he stays #1].

Ruckman slows just a little on a clean pass.

Brian Hough's incremental times: 60ft-0.963 sec., 330ft-2.568, 660ft-3.831/198.09 mph, 1,000ft-4.917.
Terry Ruckman's incremental times: 60ft-1.030 sec., 330ft-2.659, 660ft-3.921/197.91 mph, 1,000ft-4.980.

Left Lane: Steve Gasparrelli Runs 9.211/95.60, Now #5; Best prior run: 5.678/256.75, Was #5
Right Lane: Jay Payne Runs 5.974/251.91, Now #6; Best prior run: 5.685/256.65, Was #6

Both of these cars are usually in the top half of the field by now.

They leave together, spin together about 100 feet out, and slap the pedals together. Payne's car recovers and Gasparrelli'd doesn't. Payne finishes the pass under power, but can't improve.

Steve Gasparrelli's incremental times: 60ft-0.946 sec., 330ft-2.686, 660ft-4.735/107.25 mph, 1,000ft-6.972.
Jay Payne's incremental times: 60ft-0.974 sec., 330ft-2.662, 660ft-3.996/191.38 mph, 1,000ft-5.074.

Right Lane: Doug Gordon Runs 8.619/103.31, Now #2; Best prior run: 5.616/256.55, Was #2

Gordon will get a single, but it's all over before the 330 lights, as the tires start to spin.

McLaws doesn't make the call, but is already in the field.

Left Lane: Annie Whiteley Runs 8.075/100.37, Now #3; Best prior run: 5.637/257.33, Was #3
Right Lane: Tony Bartone Runs 5.636/260.91, Now #1; Best prior run: 5.592/260.66, Was #1

Whiteley is the last car that can push Bartone off the top spot. She gives a valiant try with better incrementals until right at the 330 lights, where the Mustang power is too much for the track.

Barton is deadly consistent and makes another terrific looking pass from start to finish. He will stay #1.

Annie Whiteley's incremental times: 60ft-0.950 sec., 330ft-2.546, 660ft-4.172/134.50 mph, 1,000ft-6.033.
Tony Bartone's incremental times: 60ft-0.963 sec., 330ft-2.527, 660ft-3.742/204.88 mph, 1,000ft-4.768.

5:03 p.m. Brian Hough stays on the bump spot at 5.775.
