Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Final Session
By David Gerard

CHANDLER, Ariz. - Notes from final, round 4 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, 29th annual NHRA Arizona Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Todd Lesenko Runs 4.245/300.80, Now #13; Best prior run: 5.311/144.06, Was #18
Right Lane: Jeff Diehl No Time, Now #17; Best prior run: 4.917/163.55, Was #16

4:12 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 69 degrees, relative humidity 26 percent, barometer 28.61 inches, adjusted altitude 2,507 feet, track temperature 98 degrees.

Jeff Diehl is on the bump spot at 4.917.

Diehl does his burnout and just coasts on down the track. Lesenko waits patiently and then finally stages. Looks like it didn't hurt, as he makes his best pass of the weekend and gets into the show for now in the new #13 position. Sounded like a bang in the lights, but no Stuff on the track.

Todd Lesenko's incremental times: 60ft-0.918 sec., 330ft-2.405, 660ft-3.430/253.47 mph.

Left Lane: Terry Haddock Runs 4.584/232.63, Now #17; Best prior run: 4.584/232.63, Was #17
Right Lane: Jeff Arend Runs 4.173/302.48, Now #11; Best prior run: 4.173/302.48, Was #11

Jeff Arend is on the bump spot at 4.373.

The USD Charger makes a strong leave and pulls hard to the finish line, getting into the field in the current number eleven position.

Haddock was much quicker down low and then kicked the tires right after the 330 lights. This is his last chance to qualify, so he is in and out of the throttle. The car starts a steady move towards the wall, with the tires smoking, and he finally has to give it up to keep from nailing the guard rail.

Terry Haddock's incremental times: 60ft-0.895 sec., 330ft-2.374, 660ft-3.541/205.26 mph.
Jeff Arend's incremental times: 60ft-0.925 sec., 330ft-2.368, 660ft-3.366/257.63 mph.

Left Lane: Robert Hight Runs 6.927/94.31, Now #16; Best prior run: 4.321/219.58, Was #15
Right Lane: Phil Burkart Runs 4.295/282.95, Now #15; Best prior run: 4.358/278.75, Was #16

Phil Burkart is on the bump spot at 4.358 and safe. He makes another clean pass and improves on his ET and MPH, moving up a spot to the new #15.

Hight's Mustang starts to march at the green, but is up in smoke well before the 330 lights. That pushes him to the bump spot.

Phil Burkart's incremental times: 60ft-0.920 sec., 330ft-2.395, 660ft-3.439/245.18 mph.

Left Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 4.683/177.77, Now #11; Best prior run: 4.169/268.65, Was #10
Right Lane: Bob Tasca III Runs 4.100/307.37, Now #6; Best prior run: 4.230/267.22, Was #13

Robert Hight is on the bump spot at 4.321 and safe.

Pedregon's Camry cards the best sixty foot time of the session and runs hard to mid-track before spinning the tires.

Tasca has a tune up for the track and powers to the finish line, moving all the way up to the new number six spot.

Tony Pedregon's incremental times: 60ft-0.891 sec., 330ft-2.335, 660ft-3.445/202.36 mph.
Bob Tasca III's incremental times: 60ft-0.904 sec., 330ft-2.333, 660ft-3.308/264.03 mph.

Left Lane: Alexis DeJoria Runs 4.163/295.40, Now #9; Best prior run: 4.157/303.09, Was #8
Right Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 4.110/305.01, Now #7; Best prior run: 4.179/299.66, Was #13

Wilkerson finally gets the full 1000 foot run and makes a straight and clean pass into the top half of the field in the #7 spot.

DeJoria was almost matching Wilk's pace until right near the finish line, where it looked like the Camry started to slow. She doesn't improve and in pushed into the bottom half of the field.

Alexis DeJoria's incremental times: 60ft-0.904 sec., 330ft-2.360, 660ft-3.355/260.21 mph.
Tim Wilkerson's incremental times: 60ft-0.911 sec., 330ft-2.327, 660ft-3.309/261.47 mph.

Left Lane: Del Worsham Runs 4.144/265.69, Now #8; Best prior run: 4.126/302.96, Was #8
Right Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 4.139/262.49, Now #9; Best prior run: 4.169/288.27, Was #11

A nice looking pair of runs! Beckman gets a lead off the line and has Worsham right out his side window right on down the track.

Beckman moves up to #9, but Worsham stays #8. First round match up, if the times hold!

Del Worsham's incremental times: 60ft-0.910 sec., 330ft-2.338, 660ft-3.306/266.16 mph.
Jack Beckman's incremental times: 60ft-0.897 sec., 330ft-2.308, 660ft-3.282/261.78 mph.

Left Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 4.087/306.33, Now #4; Best prior run: 4.067/308.00, Was #4
Right Lane: Ron Capps Runs 4.081/308.35, Now #5; Best prior run: 4.167/293.15, Was #11

Another pair of good passes, but they both looked to slowed right in the lights.

They left just 0.012 apart at the green and had almost the same incremental going down the track. Pedregon's Camry made a hard move to the left right before the lights and the back of the car hits the wall hard after the final light. Expensive!

Capps gets his first low four and three hundred MPH pass and jump up into the new #5 spot. Nice!

Cruz Pedregon's incremental times: 60ft-0.888 sec., 330ft-2.305, 660ft-3.288/260.41 mph.
Ron Capps' incremental times: 60ft-0.892 sec., 330ft-2.307, 660ft-3.287/262.49 mph.

Left Lane: Courtney Force Runs 4.076/297.16, Now #3; Best prior run: 4.064/315.71, Was #3
Right Lane: John Force Runs 4.392/205.16, Now #6; Best prior run: 4.100/312.64, Was #6

4:39 p.m. Back to qualifying...

Father and Daughter side by side pulling into the staging lights.

Courtney gets a big jump at the green and holds the lead until right near the 660 lights. John's Mustang is close at 60 feet and has better incrementals at the 330. It makes a move towards the center line and then strikes the tires. Courtney's car is moving around near the lights and she lifts too.

Courtney Force's incremental times: 60ft-0.892 sec., 330ft-2.315, 660ft-3.284/267.32 mph.
John Force's incremental times: 60ft-0.894 sec., 330ft-2.311, 660ft-3.328/236.42 mph.

Left Lane: Johnny Gray Runs 8.364/76.64, Now #1; Best prior run: 4.034/313.80, Was #1
Right Lane: Matt Hagan Runs 4.319/212.49, Now #2; Best prior run: 4.062/311.20, Was #2

Two hard leaves and two sets of smoking slicks.

Hagan gets off the line first and has better incrementals, but strike the tires at the 660 lights.

Gray's Charger was right behind Hagan, but is too agressive and kicks the tires about 200 feet out.

4:47 p.m. Robert Hight is on the bump spot at 4.321.
