Extreme Pro Stock Qualifying Notes, Final Session
By Larry Sullivan

NORWALK, Ohio - Notes from final, round 4 qualifying in Extreme Pro Stock at the American Drag Racing League, ADRL Summit Racing Equipment Ohio Drags VI presented by Mickey Thompson listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Right Lane: John Montecalvo Runs 4.065/177.93, Now #5; Best prior run: 5.019/153.16, Was #24

11:44 a.m. Brad Waddle is on the bump spot at 4.107.

Montecalvo is usually somewhere near the top of the field, but he's had zero success in three tries. His crew finally got their short game sorted out and he jumped right into the middle of the top half fo the field.

Now Jeff Dobbins is on the bump spot at 4.101 and we are one car away from the quickest field ever.

Right Lane: Tony Pontieri Runs 4.137/175.43, Now #21; Best prior run: 4.273/174.96, Was #24

Pontieri made a good run, but it's not good enough for this very quick field.

Left Lane: Richard Needham Jr. Runs 4.231/169.30, Now #24; Best prior run: 4.257/169.34, Was #24
Right Lane: Ron Miller Runs 4.365/164.39, Now #23; Best prior run: 4.147/169.74, Was #23

Needham is driving the Weinle Motorsports Grand Prix this weekend, just in case you wondered.

Oh-fpor-two, Needham with his best run of the event, but not good enough this weekend. Miller lost a lot of time early in his run.

Left Lane: Matt Bertsch Runs 4.093/176.33, Now #15; Best prior run: 4.112/175.46, Was #19
Right Lane: Lester Cooper Runs 4.126/174.19, Now #20; Best prior run: 4.145/173.07, Was #22

Bertsch bumps into the field, Cooper comes up short.

Now Trevor Eman is on the bump spot at 4.097, just a thousandth of a second slower than the quickest field ever.

Left Lane: Brad Waddle Runs 5.903/80.62, Now #19; Best prior run: 4.107/175.52, Was #18
Right Lane: Scott Hintz Runs 4.091/176.19, Now #15; Best prior run: 4.127/174.89, Was #21

Waddle started this session on the bump spot and Hintz only got in one full pass yesterday, debuting a new race car.

Waddle's car picked up the front wheels and turned left, forcing him to lift. Hintz, on only the third pass by the new car, bumped his way into the field, making this the quickest field ever. Now Matt Bertsch is on the bump spot at 4.093.

Left Lane: Jeff Dobbins Runs 6.077/76.76, Now #19; Best prior run: 4.101/175.55, Was #18
Right Lane: Brian Gahm Runs 4.071/177.32, Now #8; Best prior run: 4.108/177.14, Was #20

Two more very quick cars, also outside the sixteen-car field when they stage.

Dobbins' Mustang hiked the front wheels and also headed for the wall, but Gahm went right down the groove and into the top half of the field, bumping Bertsch.

Now Scott Hintz is on the bump spot at 4.091.

Left Lane: Trevor Eman No Time, Now #18; Best prior run: 4.097/177.18, Was #18
Right Lane: Kevin Bealko Runs 4.144/174.28, Now #15; Best prior run: 4.090/176.56, Was #15

Eman was the last car in line with a chance to bump into the field and he shut off after the burnout, so the sixteen-car field is set. That field could still be shuffled a bit, however.

Bealko shook, backpedaled, and practiced for eliminations.

Left Lane: Elijah Morton Runs 5.775/92.71, Now #14; Best prior run: 4.080/177.23, Was #13
Right Lane: Pete Berner Runs 4.070/177.14, Now #8; Best prior run: 4.085/176.72, Was #14

There are six pairs left (including this one).

Morton's car also hiked the left front and started toward the wall. Berner went right down the groove and into the top half (for now).

Left Lane: Doug Kirk Runs 4.081/177.44, Now #12; Best prior run: 4.078/178.19, Was #12
Right Lane: David Schorr Runs 4.098/175.57, Now #13; Best prior run: 4.079/176.05, Was #13

Two good runs, neither improved.

Left Lane: John Pluchino Runs 4.083/176.70, Now #10; Best prior run: 4.073/177.49, Was #10
Right Lane: Dean Goforth Runs 4.080/177.18, Now #11; Best prior run: 4.074/177.09, Was #11

No improvement for either, but both ran close to their previous-best time yesterday.

Left Lane: Larry O'Brien Runs 5.759/85.86, Now #7; Best prior run: 4.067/176.97, Was #6
Right Lane: John Deflorian Jr. Runs 4.039/179.54, Now #1; Best prior run: 4.068/178.87, Was #7

Deflorian really stepped up on this run, with the second-fastest speed ever. That shuffles the entire ladder.

Left Lane: Cary Goforth Runs 5.318/92.51, Now #5; Best prior run: 4.058/177.74, Was #5
Right Lane: Richie Stevens Jr Runs 4.073/176.70, Now #4; Best prior run: 4.057/177.23, Was #4

Goforth had an aggressive launch and the car headed for the wall. Stevens made a strong run, did not improve.

Left Lane: Todd Hoerner Runs 4.061/178.21, Now #2; Best prior run: 4.040/178.95, Was #2
Right Lane: Richard Penland Runs 4.070/177.30, Now #3; Best prior run: 4.055/178.12, Was #3

Final pair. Hoerner is in the left lane, where aggressive launches have sent most cars toward the wall.

Hoerner and Penland both made solid, but not aggressive runs and appear ready for eliminations.
