The nominees have been sliced down from about 130 to 22 and now the task that
awaits the panel is to select 5, right, five, from that list for induction.
That's for the International Motorsports Hall of Fame.
Oh, we know you're probably been almost inundated with various halls of fame.
Not to put any of them down, but you know, we have the NASCAR or Winston Cup
shrine, the AARWBA Legends in Racing, the International Drag Racing Hall of Fame
as well as shrines for each sport and probably each state, like here in Florida.
But this one is, as it says, International. And all motorsports.
Located in Talladega, Ala., the IMHOF has its induction dinner each April, at
the time of the first Winston Cup (next year Nextel Cup) race at the nearby
Superspeedway.
And yes, drag racing is recognized as Wally Parks, Don Garlits and Don Prudhomme
are already members.
The inductees are selected by a panel of well over 100 motorsports media from
all forms of motorsports media, says Executive Director Jim Freeman. They pare
down that original list to over 130 to 20 and ties and shortly will be asked to
select just five for next April's honor.
That vote will come later this summer and results will probably be announced in
October.
We won't take time to give you the entire list right now, but suffice to say,
there are two drag racers on that list, both of whom will probably be on this
writer's ballot, although the entire process is in secret.
Those quarter pounders:
Shirley Muldowney, winner of three NHRA Top Fuel championships and 18 races.
Although she hasn't retired the require five years and in fact is only now
having her final pass tour, she is nominated under the 62 rule. Please, please
don't let her know we told you, but that's a rule which makes anyone eligible
who is 62 or older, regardless of whether they've retired.
And as one wag suggested, that 62 rule may eventually have to be put in effect
for John Force.
The other:
Lee Shepherd, four-time NHRA Pro Stock Champion with 27 race titles and two IHRA
championships and 10 victories.
Both, Fro feels, are deserving.
Two other drag racers for whom this writer voted, but didn't make that cut,
were:
* Three-time NHRA Funny Car champion Raymond Beadle, who also went on as a car
owner for Rusty Wallace when he won his only Winston Cup title.
* Bill “Grumpy” Jenkins, who had 13 NHRA Super Stock and Pro Stock wins and six
titles as car owner. Any guy who's never seen without an ever present cigar
should definitely be considered.
Seriously, hopefully, these two will be on the nomination ballot again next year
will receive more support.

Just to show you the international scope and coverage of all forms of
motorsports taken in by the IMHOF, among the nominees for this upcoming Fab Five
are also:
Bill France Jr., who needs no introduction; Pete DePalo, two Indy car champion
back when it was Triple A and winning Indy 500 car owner; Oliver Gendebien, four
time LeMans winner, three-time Targa Floria victor and winner of the final Mille
Migla; Bill Muncey, championship driver of unlimited hydroplanes; Jan Opperman,
sprint and midget car champion: Red Farmer, one of NASCAR's 50 Greatest and
Cotton Owens, winner of more than 400 modified and late model races, nine
Winston Cup race and winner of 40 more Cup races as a car owner.
As we said, not to go through the whole list, but you get the idea.
