Top Fuel Qualifying Notes, Session #1
Fri, 25 Jul 2003, 08:09 PM
Notes from round 1 qualifying in Top Fuel at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 16th annual CARQUEST Auto Parts
NHRA Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Left Lane: Mike Strasburg Runs 8.504/90.69, Now #1
Right Lane: David Grubnic Runs 13.511/65.78, Now #2
We'll see if the Dragsters have better luck with this track than the Funny Cars.
So far, no. Both
drivers up in smoke very early in the run.
Left Lane: Kenny Bernstein Runs 5.811/153.21, Now #2
Right Lane: Scott Weis Runs 4.912/239.53, Now #1
Since the run-order in the first session is points-inverted, we'll see the Budweiser team earlier than
we're used to. By the way, Brandon Bernstein is here this weekend.
Bernstein hazed the tires just before the
1/8 mile and clicked it early. Weis avoided smoking the tires but there was a flash of flame and a loud bang just
before the finish line, and now the injector is sitting sideways.
Left Lane: Paul Romine Runs 6.075/138.43, Now #4
Right Lane: Rhonda Hartman-Smith Runs 4.918/239.40, Now #2
Romine is looking for a good showing at his sponsor's race.
Well, he get everyone's attention, but
not the way he wanted to. About 500 feet down track, something let go in Romine's engine, and there was a lot of
flame, enough to flatten the right slick. No oil on the track though.
Hartman-Smith, meanwhile, made a decent
run, and shut off just before the finish line.
Left Lane: David Baca Runs 4.796/302.35, Now #1
Right Lane: Doug Herbert Runs 6.359/130.67, Now #6
After a clean-up we're back. Nice run for Baca. Herbert smoked the tires.
Left Lane: John Smith Runs 10.566/89.59, Now #9
Right Lane: Tony Schumacher Runs 7.733/96.27, Now #7
Smith smokes 'em at the hit, Schumacher just a bit later.
Left Lane: Cory McClenathan Runs 4.915/273.22, Now #3
Right Lane: Darrell Russell Runs 8.649/93.23, Now #10
Russell up in smoke early. Cory Mac hazed the tires from half track on, but went through the lights under
power, a rarity this session.
Left Lane: Doug Kalitta Runs 4.768/301.47, Now #2
Right Lane: Larry Dixon Runs 4.692/312.57, Now #1
We'll see how good Baca's run was, as we end the session with a rematch of last week's final.
Pair
of nice runs, as Dixon goes to the pole by nearly a tenth.
