Top Alcohol Dragster Qualifying Notes, Session #2
Fri, 25 Jul 2003, 09:31 PM
Notes from round 2 qualifying in Top Alcohol Dragster at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 16th annual CARQUEST Auto Parts NHRA Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Bruce Bowler Runs 5.715/223.69, Now #10; Best prior run: 6.107/197.16, Was #15
Right Lane: Kim Parker Runs 5.599/250.46, Now #7; Best prior run: 5.716/247.43, Was #9

Great run for Parker as she moves into the top half of the field. Bowler improves too.

Left Lane: Larry Miersch Runs 5.653/243.33, Now #8; Best prior run: 5.655/230.17, Was #8
Right Lane: Gary Anderson Runs 6.268/239.53, Now #16; Best prior run: 6.312/213.87, Was #16

Pair of A/FDs here. Miersch did a smokeless burnout, usually not a good sign.

Apparently, it didn't matter, as Miersch actually improves. Anderson does too, but neither driver moves up on the qualifying order.

Left Lane: Duane Shields Runs 5.453/258.12, Now #1; Best prior run: 5.572/257.87, Was #6
Right Lane: Mike Cofini Runs 5.525/258.67, Now #3; Best prior run: 5.505/258.42, Was #2

This is a rematch of the Mission LODRS final back in May. Cofini picked up his first win there.

Nice wheels up launch for Cofini, but it was Shields who laid down the big number. That was a good ol' drag race.

Left Lane: Greg Tacke No Time, Now #16; Best prior run: 5.928/235.89, Was #15
Right Lane: Steve Federlin Runs 5.555/253.47, Now #4; Best prior run: 11.918/67.32, Was #17

The bump should change here as Federlin is not in. Tacke will not run as they could not get the car started.

Very nice run for Federlin who goes to number 4.

Left Lane: Don Hudson Runs 5.612/213.16, Now #9; Best prior run: 5.721/201.52, Was #12
Right Lane: Bill Edwards Jr Runs 5.796/231.12, Now #15; No Prior Run

Hudson was on a very good run, but there was a bang at about 1100 feet, and he slowed. Still improved though. Edwards gets in for now.

Left Lane: Brandon Johnson Runs 8.559/100.76, Now #3; Best prior run: 5.478/259.11, Was #2
Right Lane: Mark Hentges Runs 5.420/259.21, Now #1; Best prior run: 5.765/248.39, Was #13

Johnson would like to get the top spot back. Hentges, who won the LODRS event here in June, should get into the top half of the field here.

Well, Hentges gets into the top half, with a bullet. All the way to the top spot. Johnson was out of it early. Great run by Hentges at his home track.

Left Lane: Mark Niver Runs 5.618/247.66, Now #11; Best prior run: 5.665/251.77, Was #12
Right Lane: Alan Bradshaw Runs 5.941/225.75, Now #8; Best prior run: 5.571/240.55, Was #8

These two could shake up the qualifying order. Two of the finest A/FDs in the country here.

Bradshaw went .892 at 60 feet, but after that things went bad, as the car shook and put out at least one cylinder. Niver, meanwhile was only .995 at 60 feet, but still managed to improve.

Left Lane: Morgan Lucas Runs 5.457/263.98, Now #3; Best prior run: 12.357/88.47, Was #19
Right Lane: Mitch Myers Runs 5.756/242.63, Now #15; Best prior run: 17.623/75.95, Was #20

The bump should change here. Neither driver is in, but both have the potential to take the pole from Hentges.

Well they both got in. Lucas with a beautiful run. Myers had a cylinder out early.

Left Lane: Chris Demke Runs 13.183/64.50, Now #8; Best prior run: 5.567/255.77, Was #8
Right Lane: Joey Severance Runs 5.477/257.43, Now #4; Best prior run: 5.563/254.04, Was #7

Awesome run for Severance. Demke started shaking almost immediately and shut off. Severance is the fifth driver in the 5.40's.

Right Lane: Randy Eakins Runs 13.635/48.49, Now #18; Best prior run: 5.869/227.19, Was #18

Eakins is not in and is the last car of the session. Top Alcohol Dragster will get one more pass tomorrow at 10:30, so Eakins is not up against the wall...yet.

Now he is. Big-time shake for the A/FD, and Paul Julien stays in for now.
