Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #2
Fri, 25 Jul 2003, 11:25 PM
Notes from round 2 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing
Series, 16th annual CARQUEST Auto Parts NHRA Nationals listing lane, driver
name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best
prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Jack Wyatt Runs 6.395/141.40, Now #13; Best prior run:
9.686/87.40, Was #16
Current weather conditions: 81 degrees, 38 percent relative
humidity, the barometer 29.91 inches.
Wyatt started to lose traction
around half track and pedaled it one time. He had it side ways before he
lifted.
Left Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 5.170/268.87, Now #3; Best prior run:
8.333/98.70, Was #15
Right Lane: Terry Haddock Runs 5.977/160.44, Now #12; No Prior Run
Pedregon was mixing up cylinders from half track on with a very
strange flame pattern coming out of the headers. Haddock didn't make an attempt
earlier today, shuts off early here.
Left Lane: Bob Gilbertson Runs 5.174/279.09, Now #4; Best prior
run: 7.617/132.17, Was #16
Dale Creasy was paired up with Gilbertson, but elected not to run
the session. Gilbertson was able to keep the Goodyears to stick and the candle
lit all the way down the 1320.
Left Lane: Gary Densham Runs 7.342/118.09, Now #16; Best prior run:
6.190/151.12, Was #15
Right Lane: Whit Bazemore Runs 5.030/303.50, Now #1; Best prior run:
10.863/74.74, Was #18
Bazemore launched hard and was straight down Broadway to take the
number one spot. Densham lost traction and clicked it early.
Left Lane: Johnny Gray Runs 5.080/300.00, Now #3; Best prior run:
5.511/196.79, Was #13
Right Lane: John Force Runs 4.980/302.96, Now #1; Best prior run:
9.126/81.98, Was #18
This was a pretty good side by side drag race here, and Force gives
us our first four-second pass of the weekend. These two had no wasted motion
and keep the engines hitting on all eight all the way down the quarter
mile.
Left Lane: Del Worsham Runs 4.995/304.80, Now #3; Best prior run:
5.237/275.11, Was #12
Right Lane: Frank Pedregon Runs 4.982/301.81, Now #2; Best prior
run: 6.020/155.79, Was #16
Looks like the track is starting to come around or the tuners are
starting to get it figured out, because the last few passes have been pretty
good.
Left Lane: Dean Skuza Runs 5.022/299.86, Now #4; Best prior run:
5.193/276.13, Was #11
Right Lane: Ron Capps Runs 5.050/290.57, Now #6; Best prior run:
5.373/214.45, Was #15
Here is another good drag race and that Skuza team is starting to
get the combination figured out.
Left Lane: Tommy Johnson Jr. Runs 5.008/289.94, Now #4; Best prior
run: 5.180/260.97, Was #12
Right Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 5.268/280.14, Now #15; Best prior
run: 5.335/228.69, Was #15
Wilkerson launched hard and started to lose traction and pedaled it
around 200 feet. Johnson's engine let go on the top end putting a little oil
out on the track.
Left Lane: Gary Scelzi Runs 4.964/299.33, Now #1; Best prior run:
5.165/284.15, Was #10
Right Lane: Scotty Cannon Runs 8.719/92.11, Now #14; Best prior run:
5.226/264.34, Was #14
Cannon is up in smoke as soon as he hit the throttle. Scelzi was
kind of soft on the launch, but powered on through to the number one spot for
now.
Left Lane: Arnie Karp Runs 5.042/297.88, Now #9; Best prior run:
5.151/269.51, Was #10
Right Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 4.977/306.74, Now #2; Best prior run:
5.216/246.26, Was #13
Cruz has Wes Cerney helping as a team consultant for this week and
next with a great looking pass for the number two spot. Karp improves from his
afternoon pass, but will go to number nine.
