Sat, 26 Jul 2003, 02:01 PM
Notes from round 3 qualifying in Pro Stock at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 16th annual CARQUEST Auto Parts NHRA Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Right Lane: Bruce Allen Runs 10.158/112.38, Now #25; Best prior run: 14.632/57.40, Was #27

10:35 a.m. Current weather conditions: 72 degrees, 51 percent relative humidity, the barometer 30.13 inches.

The bump is Mike Corvo Jr. at 6.882. Allen has not been under power past the 200 foot mark on two previous runs.

Third verse same as the first. Massive tire shake, and then the car went left. Allen is down to his last shot.

Left Lane: Scott Geoffrion Runs 6.819/203.09, Now #3; Best prior run: 10.195/89.03, Was #26
Right Lane: Ben Watson Runs 6.893/200.44, Now #20; Best prior run: 10.261/88.83, Was #27

That will change the bump. Big-time shot for Geoffrion. The bump is Krisher at 6.873.

Left Lane: Jim Yates Runs 6.839/202.85, Now #8; Best prior run: 6.864/201.67, Was #11
Right Lane: Greg Stanfield Runs 6.818/203.03, Now #3; Best prior run: 6.919/200.74, Was #22

And we shake up the field again. This looks like it will be the best session of the weekend. Nice runs for both teams.

Left Lane: George Marnell Runs 8.670/109.43, Now #24; Best prior run: 6.919/200.38, Was #23
Right Lane: V. Gaines Runs 6.828/203.37, Now #7; Best prior run: 6.943/201.31, Was #26

Two of the have-nots here. Gaines gets in, with the big mph. Marnell with a wiggle and an early shut-off.

Left Lane: Larry Morgan Runs 6.825/202.94, Now #7; Best prior run: 6.887/200.89, Was #21
Right Lane: Mark Pawuk Runs 6.812/202.24, Now #2; Best prior run: 6.933/200.50, Was #26

Gene Wilson is on the bump at 6.870. Pawuk with a moonshot here. Both drivers are in for now. Drzayich is on the bump.

Left Lane: Mike Corvo Jr Runs 6.859/201.34, Now #16; Best prior run: 6.882/200.98, Was #21
Right Lane: Barry Grant Runs 6.794/203.16, Now #1; Best prior run: 6.920/199.52, Was #26

Barry Grant goes to the pole, at least for now. Corvo gets back in, but probably not for long.

Left Lane: Gene Wilson Runs 6.806/203.55, Now #3; Best prior run: 6.870/202.03, Was #20
Right Lane: Warren Johnson Runs 10.629/95.58, Now #23; Best prior run: 6.887/202.27, Was #23

Wilson with a blistering .993 60 foot time. WJ with Top Fuel-like tire shake. Wilson moves way up, and WJ is down to his last shot.

Left Lane: Mark Whisnant Runs 6.839/202.30, Now #15; Best prior run: 6.866/202.00, Was #20
Right Lane: JR Carr Runs 6.814/202.73, Now #5; Best prior run: 6.896/201.22, Was #25

The hits just keep on coming. Carr with his best run in a long time, and Whisnant slides in, at least for now. The bump is Allen Johnson at 6.850.

Left Lane: Troy Coughlin Runs 10.666/84.01, Now #18; Best prior run: 6.855/201.67, Was #18
Right Lane: Ron Krisher Runs 9.852/93.21, Now #23; Best prior run: 6.873/202.39, Was #23

Krisher goes 1.006 at 60 foot, and then encounters tire shake. Coughlin was out of it early, as well.

Left Lane: Taylor Lastor Runs 6.848/202.21, Now #17; Best prior run: 6.852/201.52, Was #17
Right Lane: Mike Edwards Runs 6.823/202.61, Now #10; Best prior run: 6.872/201.64, Was #22

Lastor with a little wiggle and it costs him a spot in the field. Edwards is in with that pass.

Left Lane: Allen Johnson Runs 6.806/202.97, Now #4; Best prior run: 6.850/202.00, Was #18
Right Lane: Nick Drzayich Runs 6.883/201.01, Now #22; Best prior run: 6.865/201.61, Was #22

Both drivers are trying to get back in. Johnson gets in, Drzayich slows from last night, and Yates is on the bump at 6.839.

Left Lane: Jeg Coughlin Runs 6.804/202.79, Now #3; Best prior run: 6.829/202.39, Was #15
Right Lane: Darrell Alderman Runs 12.913/80.33, Now #21; Best prior run: 6.863/201.52, Was #21

Based on Allen Johnson's run, Alderman should get in here.

Or not. Alderman's run was pretty much over by 60 feet. Coughlin goes .997 at 60 feet and moves way up.

Left Lane: Terry Adams Runs 6.842/202.76, Now #14; Best prior run: 6.827/202.21, Was #14
Right Lane: Dave Connolly Runs 6.810/203.34, Now #6; Best prior run: 6.822/202.45, Was #11

The rest of the drivers in this session are in, so Yates is safe, at least until this afternoon. No help for Adams, but Connolly solidifies his spot in the field.

Left Lane: Kurt Johnson Runs 6.784/203.61, Now #2; Best prior run: 6.818/203.03, Was #9
Right Lane: Greg Anderson Runs 6.754/205.19, Now #1; Best prior run: 6.802/203.28, Was #2

We might see side-by-side 6.70s here. KJ went from #2 at the beginning of the session to ninth right now.

Wow! That is just unreal. Anderson with both ends of the track record, and he has the field covered by three hundredths. That was a back-breaker.
