Notes from final, round 2 qualifying in Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA

Left Lane: Clint Thompson Runs 5.874/246.03, Now #3; Best prior
run: 5.903/229.24, Was #3
Right Lane: Matt Goss Runs 6.018/239.61, Now #10; Best prior run:
6.097/238.51, Was #11
Current weather conditions: 73 degrees, 49 percent relative
humidity, the barometer 30.13 inches, under sunny skies.
Thompson with a
nice launch and was able to keep the tires stuck all the way down the track to
improve.
Left Lane: John Evanchuk Runs 5.980/238.55, Now #8; Best prior run:
5.985/237.30, Was #8
Right Lane: Roger Bateman Runs 6.238/237.13, Now #6; Best prior run:
5.940/245.32, Was #6
Bateman with a whisp of tire smoke around 300 feet. Evanchuk with
almost identical E.T. from yesterday.
Left Lane: John Knox Runs 6.207/229.31, Now #12; Best prior run:
15.063/49.40, Was #14
Right Lane: John Weaver Runs 5.689/250.51, Now #2; Best prior run:
5.907/243.28, Was #5
Knox with some tire shake, but stayed with it to move up the ladder.
Weaver with a nice looking pass here.
Left Lane: Doug Gordon Runs 6.568/158.82, Now #14; Best prior run:
15.874/67.22, Was #16
Right Lane: Dale VanGundy No Time, Now #13; Best prior run:
6.559/228.00, Was #13
VanGundy made quick move toward the centerline and crossed it just
before the 330-foot cones, so this pass was Dq'ed and he will have to stay with
yesterday's pass. Gordon with some tire shake and then slowed on the top
end.
Left Lane: Mert Littlefield Runs 5.776/246.71, Now #3; Best prior
run: 15.306/47.76, Was #16
Right Lane: Bucky Austin Runs 12.628/66.03, Now #1; Best prior run:
5.673/255.53, Was #1
Austin with violent tire shake right off the starting line and
clicked it off. Littlefield with a good looking pass getting out of the groove
on the top end and close to the wall, but goes from number 16 to number
3.
Left Lane: John Patton Runs 5.869/241.32, Now #5; Best prior run:
5.950/208.20, Was #8
Right Lane: Steve Gasparrelli Runs 5.714/250.00, Now #3; Best prior
run: 5.805/250.27, Was #4
This was pretty good drag race here, Gasparrelli moves up one spot
on the ladder and Patton jumps up three.
Right Lane: Henry Coolidge Runs 5.785/249.49, Now #5; Best prior
run: 5.906/245.23, Was #7
We will finish up with a couple of singles here. Coolidge was moving
around on the top end and got close to the wall, but still moves up a couple
spots.
Right Lane: Ken Kraus Runs 5.797/248.52, Now #6; Best prior run:
6.079/242.63, Was #12
Kraus with a good looking pass here straight down Broadway into the
top half of the show.
Right Lane: Jason Rupert Runs 6.246/235.89, Now #14; Best prior run:
17.058/76.84, Was #17
There are 17 cars entered here and here is the 17th car he will need
to run quicker than Dave Germain's 6.777 seconds to get in the show. Rupert
launches hard with the wheels in the air and gets close to the wall, but does
not lift. He gets into the show and that will bump out Germain.
