Pro Stock Qualifying Notes, Session #1
Fri, 1 Aug 2003, 06:59 PM
Notes from round 1 qualifying in Pro Stock at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 16th
annual FRAM-Autolite NHRA Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed,
and position in order following run:
Left Lane: Gordie Rivera Runs 6.937/199.64, Now #1
Right Lane: Mike Corvo Jr Runs 12.446/68.25, Now #2
3:22 PM Current weather conditions: 84 degrees, 40 percent relative
humidity, the barometer 29.94 inches. It's hot and the bikes were a mixed bag of
ET's Not great ProStock weather. Corvo has a lot of shake and clicks it off. Rivera makes
one of his best runs, but it may not last through the session.
Left Lane: Dave Connolly Runs 6.855/200.62, Now #1
Right Lane: Ben Watson Runs 6.941/199.40, Now #3
Connolly has been a quick study in learning how to qualify well in the tough
ProStock field at the last few races. He is away first and makes a great pass for the
conditions. Watson wasn't as strong off the line and may not make the field.
Left Lane: JR Carr Runs 10.618/84.09, Now #5
Right Lane: George Marnell Runs 6.895/200.62, Now #2
These two have had a tough year and Carr problems continue with a lot of tire
shake in the left lane. Marnell looks good for now.
Left Lane: Gene Wilson Runs 6.853/202.12, Now #1
Right Lane: Larry Morgan Runs 6.975/200.89, Now #6
A pair of Mopars next and Wilson definitely has the advantage. Morgan had a
1.10 second ET in 60 feet to Wilson's 1.01.
Left Lane: Barry Grant Runs 6.916/199.94, Now #5
Right Lane: Mark Whisnant Runs 6.888/201.58, Now #3
Whisnant takes over the #3 spot for now with a strong pass.
Left Lane: V. Gaines Runs 6.899/201.37, Now #5
Right Lane: Taylor Lastor Runs 10.430/85.63, Now #10
Gains makes a good pass, while Lastor has problems after mid-track and
slows.
Left Lane: Mark Pawuk Runs 6.861/200.59, Now #3
Right Lane: Terry Adams Runs 6.863/202.00, Now #4
A resurgent Pawuk runs side by side with Adams and into the current top half
of the field. Two good passes.
Left Lane: Darrell Alderman Runs 6.900/200.68, Now #8
Right Lane: Jim Yates Runs 7.117/197.02, Now #13
Both cars were loose, with Yates having more fun than Alderman keeping the
Pontiac in the middle of the lane.
Left Lane: Greg Stanfield Runs 6.854/201.64, Now #2
Right Lane: Bruce Allen Runs 6.880/201.61, Now #6
Two more good passes. Allen looks better than he has recently with a good
MPH.
Left Lane: Scott Geoffrion Runs 6.844/202.12, Now #2
Right Lane: Mike Edwards Runs 6.837/201.55, Now #1
Edwards is back! The Young life Pontiac makes a strong top end charge with
Geoffrion's Ford right beside him to take over the top two spots for now.
Left Lane: Allen Johnson Runs 6.845/201.28, Now #3
Right Lane: Ron Krisher Runs 6.885/200.65, Now #10
We finally have a six second bump with Rivera's 6.937. Johnson makes a strong
run with the Dodge and Krisher has problems and shuts off.
Left Lane: Jeg Coughlin Runs 11.137/76.57, Now #23
Right Lane: Warren Johnson Runs 6.835/202.94, Now #1
WJ makes a strong run into the current #1 spot. Coughlin is loose early and
shut it off.
Left Lane: Kurt Johnson Runs 6.852/202.12, Now #6
Right Lane: Greg Anderson Runs 6.819/203.37, Now #1
Grant's 6.916 is very likely to be in trouble. Kurt Johnson has to chase the
front end to stay straight early in the run and is only able to just get into the top half
of the field. Anderson crushes the field again with both his ET and MPH. Gaines will keep
the bump spot with a 6.899.
