Pro Stock Qualifying Notes, Session #3
Sat, 2 Aug 2003, 02:17 PM
Notes from round 3 qualifying in Pro Stock at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 16th annual FRAM-Autolite NHRA Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Kurt Johnson Runs 6.866/198.73, Now #18; Best prior run: 6.852/202.12, Was #17
Right Lane: Bruce Allen Runs 6.794/203.49, Now #3; Best prior run: 6.880/201.61, Was #22

10:39 AM Current weather conditions: 65 degrees, 70 percent relative humidity, the barometer 30.07inches. The Bike session was absolutely wild with major improvements by most of the field. The top scoots in the field were over a tenth better than yesterday.

Both these guys have struggled to get a handle on the track this weekend. JR Carr is currently on the bump with a 6.843 ET, but not for long. One will be happy and one won't! KJ has good low numbers, but can't improve. Allen makes a big move up the ladder.

Left Lane: Barry Grant Runs 6.826/202.30, Now #13; Best prior run: 6.916/199.94, Was #25
Right Lane: Larry Morgan Runs 6.794/203.31, Now #4; Best prior run: 6.975/200.89, Was #26

Another pair that should be in the field. Two good runs this time and the Neon is way up the ladder.

Left Lane: V. Gaines Runs 6.845/202.48, Now #20; Best prior run: 6.877/201.13, Was #24
Right Lane: Ben Watson Runs 6.871/200.62, Now #25; Best prior run: 6.908/199.46, Was #26

Adams is 6.831. Both cars improve, but not enough for this tough field. Good 60 foot numbers are cheap, but the big HP is necessary to get in this field.

Left Lane: Gordie Rivera Runs 6.839/202.12, Now #18; Best prior run: 6.869/201.07, Was #24
Right Lane: George Marnell Runs 6.869/200.05, Now #25; Best prior run: 6.895/200.62, Was #26

Rivera runs another career best and, along with Marnell, won't make the field in this session.

Left Lane: Darrell Alderman Runs 6.820/202.00, Now #11; Best prior run: 6.857/200.65, Was #24
Right Lane: Mike Corvo Jr Runs 6.904/201.34, Now #24; Best prior run: 6.854/200.83, Was #23

Both cars have 1.00 sixty foot times, but only Alderman improves. Stanfield is now on the bump with a 6.830 ET.

Left Lane: JR Carr Runs 6.825/202.82, Now #15; Best prior run: 6.843/200.56, Was #21
Right Lane: Mark Whisnant Runs 6.795/202.85, Now #6; Best prior run: 6.842/201.61, Was #20

Double bump, but Carr's time may not last. Great move by Whisnant up into the current near top of the field. Grant is now 16th with a 6.826 ET.

Left Lane: Allen Johnson Runs 6.794/203.22, Now #5; Best prior run: 6.833/200.68, Was #20
Right Lane: Terry Adams Runs 6.904/202.00, Now #20; Best prior run: 6.831/201.94, Was #19

The Mopars are flying this session, as Johnson jumps into the top half of the field. Adams was slow off the line and doesn't improve on his prior ET.

Left Lane: Greg Stanfield Runs 6.810/202.79, Now #10; Best prior run: 6.830/201.76, Was #19
Right Lane: Jim Yates Runs 6.822/201.97, Now #16; Best prior run: 6.829/200.98, Was #18

Carr is now on the bump with his prior 6.825 ET. Another double bump and Yates stays in trouble in the current #16 spot.

Left Lane: Gene Wilson Runs 6.789/203.43, Now #2; Best prior run: 6.821/202.12, Was #15
Right Lane: Taylor Lastor Runs 6.841/202.52, Now #17; Best prior run: 6.824/202.06, Was #17

Wilson has a .995 60 foot time and moves to the current #2 spot. Lastor is just not strong enough on the low end and misses the field in this session. Yates will take a deep breath as the rest of the cars in line are already qualified.

Left Lane: Scott Geoffrion Runs 6.788/203.98, Now #3; Best prior run: 6.818/203.00, Was #14
Right Lane: Mike Edwards Runs 6.784/203.19, Now #2; Best prior run: 6.795/202.45, Was #9

Pow! To more big moves up the ladder and into the top qualifyiers. The track temp and weather are really making for big improvements.

Left Lane: Mark Pawuk Runs 6.796/202.09, Now #11; Best prior run: 6.817/201.34, Was #14
Right Lane: Warren Johnson Runs 6.785/204.23, Now #3; Best prior run: 6.795/202.88, Was #9

Good runs for both cars and WJ will take the top MPH for now.

Left Lane: Jeg Coughlin Runs 6.771/203.65, Now #1; Best prior run: 6.812/202.09, Was #14
Right Lane: Ron Krisher Runs 10.705/82.54, Now #7; Best prior run: 6.789/202.85, Was #6

The other yellow car takes a .998 60 foot time into the current #1 spot. Krisher moves out of the groove before mid-track and shuts it down.

Left Lane: Dave Connolly Runs 6.788/202.76, Now #6; Best prior run: 6.802/202.94, Was #13
Right Lane: Greg Anderson Runs 6.750/205.10, Now #1; Best prior run: 6.776/203.55, Was #2

Last pair for the session. Anderson "only" runs a 1.013 in 60 feet, but makes it clear where the power is with a big ET and MPH. Connolly has a 1.004 60 foot and moves back into the top half of the field. What a great session!!! 11:06 AM
