Sat, 2 Aug 2003, 04:45 PM
Notes from final, round 3 qualifying in Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 16th annual FRAM-Autolite NHRA Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Mert Littlefield Runs 5.961/228.34, Now #13; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Jason Rupert Runs 6.870/152.45, Now #11; Best prior run: 5.849/244.21, Was #11

1:13 PM Current weather conditions: 74 degrees, 55 percent relative humidity, the barometer 30.06 inches.

If Littlefield can make the pass, we will have a full field. He makes an easy pass and gets into the field. Rupert was slow off the line and shuts it off after mid-track.

Left Lane: John Patton Runs 5.893/226.20, Now #8; Best prior run: 5.791/244.92, Was #7
Right Lane: Ed Marx Runs 5.736/251.16, Now #5; Best prior run: 5.813/246.71, Was #10

Marx makes another looong burnout. Marx picks up the pace and moves way up the field. Patton is all over the track from the 660 and crosses over into Marx's lane after the lights.

Left Lane: Bucky Austin Runs 5.632/257.92, Now #1; Best prior run: 5.717/256.02, Was #4
Right Lane: Jay Payne Runs 5.860/235.51, Now #3; Best prior run: 5.673/254.42, Was #2

Austin parleys a .962 60-foot time into the new #1 spot. Payne was right behind him, but had a bunch of tire shake. He drove through it and finally gave it up near the lights.

Left Lane: Mark Woznichak Runs 5.765/236.96, Now #6; Best prior run: 8.177/111.01, Was #16
Right Lane: Bill Gallio Runs 6.770/204.01, Now #16; Best prior run: 6.268/225.41, Was #15

The Woz is on the bump and does what he has to do to move into the current top half of the field. Gallio slows and can't improve.

Left Lane: Steve Gasparrelli Runs 5.641/256.26, Now #2; Best prior run: 5.667/252.95, Was #2
Right Lane: Dennis Taylor Runs 6.148/175.96, Now #11; Best prior run: 5.793/246.84, Was #11

The bump is Gallio's 6.268 and both these cars are well into the show. Gasparrelli improves his ET and MPH, but will stay in the current #2 spot. Taylor chased him for most of the way, had some tire shake early on, and gave it up near the top end for no apparent reason.

Left Lane: Bret Williamson Runs 5.689/250.27, Now #4; Best prior run: 5.773/244.92, Was #7
Right Lane: John Weaver Runs 5.692/248.84, Now #5; Best prior run: 5.786/248.02, Was #8

They started the run qualified next to each other and finish the run qualified next to each other. However, they both run well and move into the top half of the field.

Left Lane: Clint Thompson Runs 5.766/250.18, Now #10; Best prior run: 5.864/242.67, Was #13
Right Lane: Doug Gordon Runs 5.691/251.91, Now #5; Best prior run: 5.792/244.78, Was #10

A little shake for both cars and while they both improve, Gordon takes off a tenth to move way up the ladder.

Left Lane: Dale VanGundy Runs 6.012/238.05, Now #15; Best prior run: 6.084/238.43, Was #15

VanGundy picks up over seven hundredths, but will stay in the 15 spot. 1:40 PM
