Top Fuel Round 2 Eliminations
By Larry Sullivan

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Results of round 2 eliminations in Top Fuel at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 36th annual MAC Tools NHRA Gatornationals:

 Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-----Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT----ET---Speed
743 Morgan Lucas 7 Cory McClenathan
E2 0.044 4.706 302.01 ****WINNER**** 0.095 4.631 320.17
 Prior rounds:
E1 (J Smith ) 0.052 5.533 228.60 (S Weis ) 0.126 4.573 315.34
 Qualified: #6 4.537 320.97 #3 4.497 329.91
1:33 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 72 degrees, relative humidity 53 percent, barometer 29.93 inches, adjusted altitude 1,098 feet, track temperature 106 degrees.

Despite his short Top Fuel career, Lucas came in with a 2-0 edge against Cory Mac. Cory Mac has been running well here this weekend, however, so their prior record didn't mean much. Lucas had a great light and he led to half track, but his engine started eating itself up on the top end and McClenathan went by for the win. Cory McClenathan's incremental margins (negative if behind): 60ft(-0.054), 330 ft(-0.052), 660ft(-0.032), 1,000ft(-0.008). MOV: 0.0247 seconds (approximately 11 feet).

835 Andrew Cowin 2 Doug Kalitta
E2 0.090 4.740 265.80 ****WINNER**** 0.089 4.700 308.85
 Prior rounds:
E1 (B Bernstein ) 0.101 4.941 216.19 (D Herbert ) 0.070 4.565 326.44
 Qualified: #10 4.583 314.35 #2 4.488 325.14
Doug came in with a 5-3 edge against Cowin, but Cowin almost pulled this one out, leading from 330 feet past the 1,000-foot marker, but once again his engine erupted in flames and his car slowed, allowing Kalitta to take the win. Doug Kalitta's incremental margins (negative if behind): 60ft(0.002), 330 ft(0.000), 660ft(-0.019), 1,000ft(-0.019). MOV: 0.0415 seconds (approximately 16 feet). There was no oil on the track, just pieces of engine block and car parts, so there won't be a penalty. Kalitta faces Cory Mac next round and Cory will pick the lanes.

 Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-----Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT----ET---Speed
91 Larry Dixon 1 Tony Schumacher
E2 ****WINNER**** 0.078 4.594 318.13 0.070 5.078 198.45
 Prior rounds:
E1 (D Baca ) 0.056 4.712 309.91 (R Fuller ) 0.075 4.549 328.94
 Qualified: #5 4.525 325.61 #4 4.520 333.95
Schumacher led this one past half track, then he started smoking the tires and Dixon reeled him in for the upset win. Larry Dixon's incremental margins (negative if behind): 60ft(-0.015), 330 ft(-0.040), 660ft(-0.013), 1,000ft(0.136). MOV: 0.4763 seconds (more than 100 feet).

 Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-----Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT----ET---Speed
104 Clay Millican 5 David Grubnic
E2 ****WINNER**** 0.071 4.649 308.53 0.116 4.698 295.66
 Prior rounds:
E1 (S Kalitta ) 0.084 4.651 313.58 (B Litton ) 0.084 4.534 322.81
 Qualified: #8 4.572 304.77 #1 4.481 331.85
Neither of these two drivers has an NHRA event win on their record, but both appear destined to do so "real soon now." Millican was away first and pulled away from Grubnic when the Aussie's car started hazing the tires at half track. That's two Kalitta cars in a row for the Werner Enterprises team and their next challenge will be Larry Dixon - Dixon will choose the lanes.
