POMONA, Calif. - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 40th annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Peter Russo Runs 9.984/83.77, Now #22; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Dale Pulde Runs 5.242/267.16, Now #14; No Prior Run
3:21 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 68 degrees, relative humidity 54 percent, barometer 28.85 inches, adjusted altitude 2,089 feet, track temperature 96 degrees.
We have the Fuel Coupes coming on from stage left. Neither car was able to get down the track
yesterday so this is the first hit for both. Russo has problems right at the hit and was off
the pedal early. He came to a stop on the track after the finish and the quad had to come out
to haul the car away. Pulde had holes out almost from the hit. He is in the show but I don't
believe that's going to hold up very long.
Left Lane: Grant Downing Runs 5.046/289.94, Now #13; Best prior run: 17.981/50.48, Was #26
Right Lane: Jack Wyatt Runs 5.079/266.32, Now #14; Best prior run: 10.726/79.22, Was #23
Downing was motioning franticly to his crew about something before the body came down. No one seemed to move very fast and the body was lowered and he was motioned forward. The car made a fair move and he had a .911 60 foot number. As he went down track a couple of holes went out but he still put up numbers good enough to get him in the field. Wyatt had a bit less drama and he also makes the show.
Left Lane: Bob Bode Runs 4.829/307.44, Now #8; Best prior run: 11.051/78.97, Was #26
Right Lane: Ron Capps Runs 4.887/315.86, Now #10; Best prior run: 9.140/96.57, Was #23
This is much better for both of these drivers. Bode actually will slide into the top half of the show and Capps sits #10 for the moment. Good looking runs for both cars as there was no smoke and no drama at all.
Left Lane: Jerry Toliver Runs 12.544/74.67, Now #26; Best prior run: 10.824/80.53, Was #26
Right Lane: Phil Burkart Runs 4.811/324.44, Now #8; Best prior run: 8.925/93.38, Was #23
Toliver was up in smoke right at the hit and even though he pedaled the car just wouldn't recover. Burkart had nothing go wrong in the other lane and he slots into the top half, for a few moments at least. Jack Wyatt was bumped by Burkart.
Left Lane: Gary Scelzi Runs 4.780/327.03, Now #7; Best prior run: 8.964/85.08, Was #24
Right Lane: Johnny Gray Runs 4.891/320.36, Now #13; Best prior run: 7.885/104.11, Was #23
Scelzi had problems yesterday evening but he can breath easier now. The Stratus is flying and Scelzi is qualified. Gray makes the show but is a bit closer to the bump than Gray. That bumped Bartone and Downing.
Left Lane: Jim Head Runs 4.849/313.07, Now #12; Best prior run: 5.414/193.93, Was #22
Right Lane: Bob Gilbertson Runs 7.482/138.14, Now #24; Best prior run: 7.321/141.18, Was #24
Well now. There's a new career best for Head in a Funny Car. The run was clean and straight and the only small problem for him was a drift toward the center by the time he got to the finish line. Gilbertson had a .898 short time but shortly after that the car was up in smoke.
Left Lane: Tony Bartone Runs 4.854/309.63, Now #13; Best prior run: 4.983/310.55, Was #18
Bartone gets a single and makes the most of it. The motor sounded loaded hard as the car rolled in but he stayed hooked all the way to the stripe.
Left Lane: Frank Pedregon Runs 5.884/161.69, Now #18; Best prior run: 4.950/304.46, Was #18
Right Lane: Terry Haddock No Time, Now #21; Best prior run: 5.180/234.94, Was #21
Pedregon was on a pretty good lap until the rubber band appeared to fall off the supercharger. Haddock had problems as well and coasted to a stop before the finish.
Left Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 4.814/311.92, Now #7; Best prior run: 4.779/321.12, Was #6
Right Lane: Gary Densham Runs 4.775/326.71, Now #5; Best prior run: 4.909/248.52, Was #17
Well, seventies are cheap this weekend. Densham goes 4.775 and can still only slot into the #5 spot. We have 4.7s all the way down to Cruz Pedregon's 4.796 in the #9 position. Tony had holes out but still manages a 4.814.
Left Lane: Tommy Johnson Jr. Runs 9.412/82.40, Now #6; Best prior run: 4.777/323.74, Was #6
Right Lane: Jeff Arend Runs 5.849/162.02, Now #17; Best prior run: 4.896/315.64, Was #17
Johnson struck the tires early and had no choice about throwing in the towel. Arend appeared to be running fairly well until there was lots of fluid from the pipes. He might have tossed the belt in the middle of the run.
Left Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 4.891/305.15, Now #4; Best prior run: 4.764/317.49, Was #4
Right Lane: Whit Bazemore Runs 11.045/74.94, Now #12; Best prior run: 4.829/305.63, Was #12
Bazemore struck the tires early in the run and lifted. Wilkerson ran the car all the way through but didn't improve from his first round 4.764.
Left Lane: Eric Medlen Runs 4.775/321.04, Now #3; Best prior run: 4.764/320.28, Was #3
Right Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 7.024/120.46, Now #9; Best prior run: 4.796/324.51, Was #9
Medlen just about duplicates his Thursday pass here and his crew seems real pleased. There were lots of high fives exchanged by the crew when the numbers came up. Pedregon had problems and pedaled once. He got no help and had to give this one up.
Left Lane: John Force Runs 4.809/305.84, Now #2; Best prior run: 4.747/324.12, Was #2
Right Lane: Del Worsham Runs 4.777/322.88, Now #1; Best prior run: 4.737/328.54, Was #1
Worsham couldn't duplicate his Thursday best but he'll still be pretty pleased with this one. Force will remain #2 behind Worsham after his pony ran out of steam at about 1100 feet. The Mustang appeared to nose over and he clicked it early. That's all for round two of Funny Car.
