Top Alcohol Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #2

POMONA, Calif. - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 40th annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Marc White Runs 5.735/253.52, Now #8; Best prior run: 6.008/173.74, Was #13
Right Lane: Jon Capps Runs 6.531/156.97, Now #17; Best prior run: 10.807/76.18, Was #19

11:45 a.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 67 degrees, relative humidity 58 percent, barometer 28.88 inches, adjusted altitude 2,030 feet, track temperature 95 degrees.

White had some problems yesterday but seems to recover pretty well here on the second hit. He was very busy in the car and used a lot of the left lane but team owner and tuner Randy Goodwin will get one more shot this afternoon. Capps had good numbers to half track and the abruptly slowed.

Left Lane: Bernie Harrington Runs 5.785/245.45, Now #10; Best prior run: 5.933/244.34, Was #12
Right Lane: Ron August Jr Runs 5.785/250.27, Now #2; Best prior run: 5.663/257.04, Was #2

Identical ETs but August was faster by faster by five mph. The bad news for August was his time was slower by over a tenth than his first hit. Harrington did pick up a couple of positions in the show.

Left Lane: Hank Coolidge Runs 5.712/251.58, Now #6; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Tate Branch Runs 6.254/174.41, Now #18; Best prior run: 7.485/118.82, Was #18

Coolidge recovered from his trip across the centerline yesterday and goes top half. Branch gets no help and will need the final run today.

Left Lane: Mark Woznichak Runs 5.722/252.57, Now #4; Best prior run: 5.690/254.57, Was #4
Right Lane: Kris Hool Runs 6.113/245.54, Now #14; Best prior run: 5.981/248.02, Was #14

The Woz was all over the left lane but will hold on to the #4 spot due to his 5.690 from Thursday. Hool slowed and will stand on his 5.98.

Left Lane: Doug Gordon Runs 5.786/249.16, Now #12; Best prior run: 13.675/71.72, Was #22
Right Lane: Mert Littlefield Runs 9.869/86.37, Now #8; Best prior run: 5.726/250.69, Was #8

Gordon goes from outside the show to a fairly safe #12 spot. Littlefield zinged the motor at about 330 and shut it down immediately.

Left Lane: Brian Hough Runs 5.729/250.78, Now #9; No Prior Run
Right Lane: John Weaver Runs 5.765/245.67, Now #11; Best prior run: 6.099/238.64, Was #17

Side by side all the way down and both drivers go from not in the show to well into the show. If they had door handles.....

Left Lane: Bil Gallio Runs 6.149/240.81, Now #19; Best prior run: 7.964/178.31, Was #22
Right Lane: Jeff Carroll Runs 5.742/245.14, Now #11; Best prior run: 6.076/240.85, Was #18

Here's another pair that is not currently qualified. The track was a bit tricky for this class on Thursday but today is seeing more completed runs. Gallio just didn't get the car to run. A 1.123 60 foot number just didn't get better for him. Carroll's pass looked better than the 5.74. No a problem to be seen on the run.

Left Lane: Steve Gasparrelli Runs 5.711/253.09, Now #6; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Danny Townsend Runs 5.674/253.52, Now #3; Best prior run: 5.716/246.39, Was #7

What a difference a day makes. Yesterday we had full cloud cover and were surrounded by showers. Today there's a little haze, but not a cloud to be seen. Big move for Townsend. This one looked just as quick as what came up on the boards. Gasparrelli had problems yesterday trying to drive the car with the front wheels in the air. On the first hit he crossed the centerline but here the wheels are planted and he's top half.

Left Lane: Clint Thompson Runs 5.691/249.95, Now #6; Best prior run: 5.840/249.67, Was #17
Right Lane: Dennis Taylor Runs 5.693/250.27, Now #4; Best prior run: 5.683/249.39, Was #4

Thompson has been bumped and looks to get back into the field. Thompson makes the show in style but going straight to the top half. Taylor doesn't improve but will be pleased that the car repeated very nicely.

Left Lane: Bucky Austin Runs 5.763/252.99, Now #8; Best prior run: 5.712/251.58, Was #8
Right Lane: Jay Payne Runs 5.782/241.54, Now #1; Best prior run: 5.636/258.12, Was #1

Bit of a surprise here. With the conditions like they are who would have thought that low ET between these two would be a 5.76. Austin did use up a bit of lane and the Safari has dispatched all the equipment to just before the finish to start cleaning the lane. Payne's run was straighter but he was slower than the rest of the hitters at almost every mark. After all was said and done they dusted and cleaned both lanes at the top end. Just might have gotten a bit dusty.

Left Lane: Bret Williamson Runs 5.685/247.93, Now #5; Best prior run: 5.872/247.16, Was #18
Right Lane: Vern Moats Runs 11.149/71.61, Now #25; No Prior Run

Moats has the car turn right and then abruptly left right at the hit. He shuts off and Williamson joins the show in the top half. Mighty unusual as Moats is now at the bottom of the field as he was DQd yesterday for a lane violation.

Left Lane: John Patton Runs 5.999/242.50, Now #17; Best prior run: 5.777/248.43, Was #16
Right Lane: Hannes Wernhart Runs 5.743/238.85, Now #15; Best prior run: 6.186/232.27, Was #21

This field is filling out nicely and it's starting to be really quick. Wernhart got very close to the wall on the top end but his 5.743 puts him in the show at #15. No such luck for Patton as his 5.999 leaves him in the #17 spot, just outside the field.

Right Lane: Roger Bateman Runs 5.802/251.16, Now #20; Best prior run: 11.100/71.05, Was #24

Bateman is the final car of the session and looks to crack the field. He will have no distractions as he got a single. He launched pretty well but as the car went down course he got closer and closer to the wall. By the time he crossed the finish line there was a cloud of dust. The scoreboard told the tale though and he's still not qualified. The session ends with Payne on the pole with his 5.636 and Weaver on the bump at 5.765.
